Cover Versions that transcend the original
Discussion
Have you got a link to the Faith No More version of War Pigs????

Thumbs up for that, it's fantastic. I don't have an online link, but there was an excellent live version on their "Live At Brixton Academy" album that was released in the early 1990s. I'm sure you'll be able to find a copy for sale somewhere.

James Dean Bradfield of the Manics, covering George Michael's Last Christmas, both odd and awesome in equal measure.

I stand by all the ones I posted on the original thread in P&P
Sunday Morning - Strawberry Switchblade (Velvet Underground)
Jolene - improvised duo by Billy Bragg and Natalie Merchant on Andy Kershaw's radio program years ago (Dolly Parton). Was great until they forgot the words
I said:
Jennifer Warnes - First we take Manhattan (Leonard Cohen)
Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)
Lick the Tins - Can't help falling in love with you (dunno - Elvis?)
Madness - It must be love (Labi Siffre)
Mary Coughlan - A thrill's a thrill (Long John Baldry)
and
Mike Oldfield - North Star (as Platinum IV) (Philip Glass)
and add two more I've remembered since:Soft Cell - Tainted Love (Gloria Jones)

Lets face it, the original was pretty bad so a death metal version was alaways going to sound better.

Ten Masked Men ruled! They did loads of death metal covers from that era. Lets face it, the original was pretty bad so a death metal version was alaways going to sound better.
I just posted this on the P&P version of this thread, but this one has the more recent life in it;
Two favourites covers here;
Xentrix cover of "Ghostbusters", suddenly the song it was always trying to be.
And the very very best cover ever;
"Different Drum" by The Lemonheads - originally by the Stone Ponys and Linda Ronstadt. Just great.

I'll probably get slated for saying this, but I've always rather liked Tori Amos' cover of Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy the Silence':

She did a whole album of cover versions, and this is my favourite from that album. The original is one of my favourite songs of all time, so I think I'm in a good position to judge the cover without taking anything away from the original.

Yes, awesome cover, If we're going for obscure not altogether serious '80s British thrash then I give you:Lawnmower Deth's covers of Kids In America and Crazy Horses and Acid Reign's covers of Hangin' On The Telephone, Warriors Of Ghengis Khan and The Magic Roundabout theme tune. Also talking Warriors Of Ghengis Khan, I'd forgotten how funny Bad News covering Bohemiam Rhapsody is:
