biggrin Cheers! It plays even better than it looks. Even for a ham-fisted, broken fingered oaf like myself! The thread about my journey is here: Swirled Guitar.

Plays well enough - £200 off eBay for a teenage kick? Can't argue with that.

Just picked up a cheap 5-String to see if I get on with it over the standard 4 - some of the stuff we're playing now requires drop-tuning so, if I can relearn to use it properly, I'll make a full switch with a more expensive bass later on...

For now this'll do @ £275

Can anyone answer a question? why are basses bigger bodied than their six string counterparts? bearing in mind the Hofner violin bass is considerably smaller.

I'd always assumed it's something to do with the resonance - needs more wood at the lower frequencies. Saying that I've played some very nice basses that are small-bodied - Warwick Thumb basses come to mind specifically. My Musicman Sterling is pretty small-bodied, smaller than the Stingray.

The ESP 5-String a few posts back is pretty huge-bodied and weighs a ton compared to the Sterling. Tonight's 4-hour practice promises to be a bit of a bugger!

I thought it was that plus proportionality with the longer scale length?

There are a lot of body-shapes/styles though, like the Thumb which I think looks great despite being titchy.

I suspect it might be an evil joke by guitar makers to wreck bassists backs though.

If it is an evil joke, then they got the idea from Les Paul.

Really fancy one of these after watching the Andertons video. Looks like a genuinely capable bit of kit for a very reasonable price. Looks ace with the little Orange cab too.

On that note, the Quilter Tone block looks like a bit of kit.

May I just point out that pickups are magnetic, therefore cannot hear wood, only strings.

Was discussing this yesterday in particular relation to the strat where they are screwed to the plastic pickguard & not the body. I guess the wood has a bearing on how the strings vibrate along with other factors & therefore influence the tone produced through the pickups.
