I don't think you can buy him mate, it's not the 1800s any more.

I'm actually putting this one up for sale, if anyone's interested?

No, it's not a reissue.

Not one of mine, but I spotted this in Guitar Guitar the other day and was just astounded. As soon as I saw the gold hardware I thought 'Is that a RICHIE KOTZEN!'. Quite a find. Stunning piece of kit.

He's actually a bit of a fusion wizard (and was a very competent if somewhat anonymous shredder back in the MVP days). Not so keen on the Winery Dogs band, but the start of this is outrageously good:

Nice Suhr amps behind as well. I'm not so keen on Kotzen's later stuff, but the songs I've heard from his shrapnel album in 89 were pretty good, although I'm not sure if it was just the recording, or the youtube upload, but it sounded really tinny, probably the later. Not very well know, although, as I'm sure you know, he did the guest solo on Ner Ner for Guthrie's Erotic Cakes album.

He also played on Poison's Native Tongue album :runs:

Looks like early '60s, after the changeover from dot markers to blocks (1962?).

Lovely - looks like a twin to Clapton's block marker ES-335 (which I think was a '64).

Haha yes he did!

Everyone was in a Glam metal band back then, it was the 80s...

'scuse the ashtray. Just got this Japanese '62 reissue Strat with a fotoflame finish as a drunken eBay purchase. I'm a Gibson guy, but this is so nice to play, the neck is just sublime. Quite fancy changing the pickups out for something a little hotter though if anyone has any suggestions?

This one's a 1963. Aside from the Bigsby removal (Clapton's was removed as well IIRC) and machinehead replacement (with correct Klusons - someone had put Schallers on years and years ago) it's in unmolested condition. Pickups are original Patent humbuckers (same as PAFs in evedry regard but the sticker). Cherry is still nice and dark, as the guitar has generally spent most of its life either in a shadowy hallway (no direct sunlight) or in its case.

A couple or three Seymour Duncan hotrails would see that thing sing all night.

No, it's really tinny. I had the cd, it's super-compressed and trebly.

Kotzen's instructional video is really good, he plays an incredible song at the start, I've never been able to find the name of it though. Super fusion.

Aside from the hot rails suggestion, I've just fitted some Lollar Specials to my Strat (USA Standard) and they are stunning. It was a toss up between them and some Lindy Fralins - in the end I went for the Lollars as they were marginally more powerful but not silly-powerful if you know what I mean...

If you think it's a photo of a wood finish that is then clear coated over, then you'd be right. They do look good though even if it's not 'real' so to speak.

Re pickups; I've been recommended to try Bareknuckle pickups (though it was for my Epiphone LP I know they do pick ups for Strats too).

Ah right, I'm not a fan of the sound. I blame Jason Becker, he produced it...

Super Fusion would be a wicked album title (but then I have no taste).

Thanks for the recommendations, think i'm going to have to get on Youtube and check out how they sound. Those Lollars look to be a good shout though, and a stload cheaper than Bare Knuckles. Yeah the Fotoflame is essentially a photographic film applied to the body then coated. I think the bodies are either all basswood or basswood with an alder cap. I'm no expert but I think this one is all basswood as the flame is applied to both sides of the body. The finish looks great from a distance and not too bad up close. She's a low-resolution fox, a bit like my girlfriend. wink
