I didn't play smoke on the water or seven nation army either...

Which brings us to an interesting question, what's the most overplayed riff in guitar shops?

The place I go to in Aberdeen is awesome. Good mixture of young stoner rockers and older yoda types. I get the impression they spend a lot of the day noodling.

I bought an amp head recently and the shop only has two demo 'booths' that were both in use, so I had to play in the middle of the shop.

I get so concious of not playing the obvious stuff (especially if you mess it up, everyone will know). Instead I try to play really random stuff, or maybe something I've written myself. I ended up playing the melody to 'Misty' (ancient song from the 1960s covered by Ella Fitzgerald), but with the Marshall set to overdrive or some Scott Joplin stuff that I remember my Mum playing on piano when I was young.

Got to be careful though as if I go too old and start trying a bit of Beethoven then there have been bands who use sections for solos ('Metalheart' by a band called Accept used 'Fur Elise' by Beethoven for the solo). Pretty sure Rainbow/Deep Purple might have done similar too.

Still it avoids the old 'Stairway denied' as above. smile

PS. The Les Paul looks gorgeous.

Out of interest. Where do you use in Aberdeen? Imported Instruments?

This was my Christmas present to myself - an American Standard Strat in a very nicely aged Olympic White, from 1987, the first year of production, complete with original case. At least one of the pickups have been changed, but I have the parts to put that right.

And by a strange coincidence, Lefty, I just pulled the trigger on this 2003 LP Standard.

Ooh now there's lovely! If that LP is still there next time I'm in town...I might not be able to stop myself.

It's a little silly - I just picked up some mountain biking bits and pieces - all of which combined to nearly the cost of another guitar. Priorities, eh? wink

Yes, dead chuffed scoring a Strat and a Les Paul within days of each other.

Damn, I'll have to sell a couple now.

looks like a dmarzio humbucker on the back of the strat??
Did exactly the same on my '74 strat to try and get more weight to the sound. Didn't really work to be honest but I kept all the original bits as I knew that one day it would have to go back to original to sell it. Which, given how little it gets played may happen

The 2016 traditional range is well worth a look. Very well priced, I'll post pictures later wink

Have you got one?

I loved the one I played (pictured above), absolutely loved it. Haven't tried a standard, to be honest the 2016 range confuses me!

Studios, either HP or T.
Traditionals, either HP or T. I think? You get a traditional traditional?
Standard, again HP or T.

Am I right in thinking the High Perf gives you the auto tuners and wider neck. Anything else? Higher grade of top?

Then there's historic, true historic, VOS etc which I don't really get either confused

Do the 2016 model Les Pauls still have richlite fretboards? I'd quite like a Les Paul Custom, but want ebony!

It's a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails. Trouble is it overpowers the other two pups so that will have to be changed. Also the setup is awful, it buzzes all over the place. Action too low and not enough neck relief. I may also have to level and reprofile the frets, but once that's all done, it will be awesome.

The Les Paul on the other hand, is perfect straight out of the box.

HP means you get a titanium zero fret nut and re profiled neck to body joints for better access as well as the robo tuners. T is classic normal neck. Normal tuners and nut. I suspect that a lot of people will now want the HP neck but not the tuners!

Historic are near as damit copies of a known old Les Paul, they find a 58 and copy the sun faded top etc.true historic means the go even further and copy all the plastic parts, bit bonkers really.

If it helps I have a Seymour Duncan Jeff Beck Junior in the bridge of my Strat, doesn't overpower the other stock pickups and sounds really good. Had it in for about 6 years now and couldn't be happier.

I needed a spare guitar and had sold a load of gear so fulfilling a need I bought a 2016 flying V Traditional. Normal neck, tuners etc. It is a complete weapon, I love it. I would have liked to have tried the HP as it is only £200 more and that's almost worth it for the hard case. I can take or leave the robot tuners.

Alfie decided that he wanted a guitar for Christmas and paid for most of it! It is a 2016 les paul 50's tribute. After playing a load of other Les Pauls at around the same cash (£750) this was a clear winner. It is a really good guitar, no bells or whistles but it is a really lovely thing to play and sounds brilliant.
