The Alembic is a lovely bass - very road worn and it has super, super low action thanks to the super rigid neck. Really wish I had Jimmy Johnsons' five string version...Jon is up for building a replica if I can scrape the parts together.You're correct in spotting the Mark King influence. I started playing in 1986 and my first lessons included an introduction to Level 42 (plus Jaco Pastorius, Flea and Stanley Clarke). My first decent instrument four years later was a Jaydee which I played exclusively for 12 years until my day job career started to establish. Because of playing just the Jaydee for so long, I've always been more comfortable on wide bodied basses like the Alembic and Pangborn. While I was a huge MK fan from 87 through to 94 (when the band broke up) the cultish fanboy following puts me off a bit these days. That's not Mark's fault at all, just that some of those guys forget to reign the intensity in when online.
Incidentally, I got on a Jubilee Line train one Thursday morning in November last year and found Mark King standing in front of me as the doors closed! He did a fantastic job of compensating for my stunned mullet impersonation, after I got beyond "Excuse me...are you Mark King?!". When I managed to come to my senses we talked how he managed to buck the record company system and actually make more than when the band was under contract and the importance of good drummers. He knew of something I'd been involved with too but I really wish I'd had more time with him. Would have loved to talk about guitarist Alan Murphy a bit more and what whether he was ever an Alembic 'endorser' or not (they say not, but they still released a signature bass). On his back was a Gibson EB3 in a gig bag which he was taking to Jack Bruce's widow, I think there was a jam planned as well. A completely random and unforgettable moment of a lifetime.

Always good to go with your instincts first when it comes to basses. Jon is a lovely bloke and his knowledge of building instruments is breath taking. My build is pretty demanding - well beyond what I'm actually capable of doing but he likes the challenge of dealing with tricky design problems and says it keeps things interesting. The Doug Wimbish signature model has a pencil thin neck too. Both brands are much better value second hand although my Pedulla has actually gone up in value since I got it 10 years ago.I'd definitely look at selling the Deep Impact if the Future Impact works out. Mine is far from collector quality though.
Not a guitar but I've just ordered one of these:
Been a DT fan from the start but always wanted a 6L6 loaded Boogie ever since hearing Leatherwolf's (they used 2C+s on their first albums apparently) beautiful tone.
Just wish I still had my USA Gunslinger (they were big BCRich users at that time) to go with it, which I sold to a friend for £350 in the 90s

All the guitars in my house get named after the first song played on them. It just so happened the first song on this one was Empty rooms, so yes it was Gary Moore.I've been after one of these for ages. It appears they are the product of rocking horses in the UK.

Yeah, they seem to crop up on a certain auction site every now and then but mostly seem to be the Korean made ones rather than the original UK made. From my point of view the sound, how they play, the design..... oh, everything? But then again that's my point of view and only important to me and no-one else. That one is a really well balanced colour palate, hopefully the owner is really happy with it.
