If I was on my way out to a gig and Mum asked, which guitar are you taking? I'd have to say, the red one, the blue one, etc.

Here's my latest purchase, 1979 Strat in Sienna Sunburst, one of my favourite Strat colours.

(That one would have sneaked through as I already have two other sunburst guitars.)

Some wives get it. Some don't. Mine has just allowed me to put this up.... and she brought me the middle one.

Excellent! See if she is really a keeper by seeing if she can track down one of the jungle print JS models from the early 90's! As beautiful as they are rare.

Hot off the bench is a hardtail strat style guitar I built for my daughter. The neck is an Allparts one, just required finishing, fret level & dress.

I built the body from a 2 piece alder blank & a borrowed template. It's finished in surf green nitro. I'm pretty pleased with it. I didn't factor in the thickness of the nitro on the inner sides of the neck pocket and there has been a bit of chipping that I'll touch up at some point.

Pickups are some BKP Irish Tours that I picked up off eBay a year or so ago. First impressions are good. The action is nice & low with no choking or buzzing. A couple of the nut slots could do with being a bit lower but I'll deal with that when I get my hands on a set of nut files.

Next one up is a butterscotch tele style for my dad. I'll hopefully get around to doing some form of build diary for that one and maybe having a crack making at the neck too.

I've just spotted an 80's style (but modern) star shaped guitar that I really like the look of.

The problem is, I'm not into heavy metal at all. I like playing mainly blues and the occasional spot of Vai twiddly stuff and my Ibanez RG sees me right for that.

Would a star shaped guitar be "pointless" for my kind of playing, or should I just go for it?

The guitar can be shaped however you want, as long as it plays well and you like playing it who gives a st?

Looks great! I take it that you're a carpenter or you've done this stuff before? I thought about this myself, Having a stab at making some kind of telecaster out of pine, with some humbuckers fitted. I'd have to buy a neck though.

Bit of a long shot - has anyone here recently bought my old Strat Plus USA?

Thanks. This is my second build, no previous experience. TBH it's not that difficult, just a case of taking time. I cut to shape with a jigsaw and used a router on a template to get the outline, neck pocket, control cavities. The hardest part was making sure the string holes were all lined up.

If you have some of the tools already then that will help keep costs down. There are also lots of tutorials on YouTube covering every type of guitar you can imagine. TDPRI and MyLesPaul websites are also amazing sources of knowledge.

I was feeling aggrieved by the recent 25-30% price increases I'd noticed on various Fender amps I'd had my eye on, so I've been trawling all the used sections of various shops, plus eBay and Gumtree. Tonight I managed to find a used Fender Blues Junior III Tweed edition. I've tried one and the standard black model and there was quite a difference in favour of the Tweed covered one for my taste, so I snapped this one up straight away for nearly half the current new price.

Shop picture for now, but I guess everyone knows what a Tweed BJ looks like:

Good little amps those - you can get full overdrive at sensible volumes...

Well I'm not so taken with the overdrive, but I bought it for the cleaner tones which I'm loving with my Strat or Telecaster. It's not too heavy either, so if I fancy taking it out to an open mic gig or round to a friend's house it won't break my back.

I seem to be collecting 'Tweed':

As in an original one, or a reissue?

Plenty of reissues about it seems:

Might be worth trying Coda, Peach Guitars or Guitar Village if you're after an original one?

Damn...I skimmed the bit about white.

Seems they are hard to find then, but I'll keep my eyes open as I'm always searching round websites for bargains.

New old guitar, picked this up on Monday, a Fender Jim Root signature Telecaster. It was a right carry on to get, I bought some 12-60 strings as I was planning to put it in C standard tuning then went to the seller's flat to check the guitar out, it was missing the high E and all the other strings were totally dead. He didn't even have an amp to test the pickups on. It was priced well though, considering what these things go for new these days.

When I got it home I cleaned it up as it was absolutely filthy. Clearly the previous owner sweats like hell and wasn't a fan of cleaning his guitars. The matte black finish has a well-used sheen, but the pickguard, frets, fretboard and neck all came up nicely. I'm glad I got this as a used guitar, as when I buy a guitar new I like to keep it pristine. This one is worn in and it's relaxing to not have to fret so much (lol) about keeping it perfect. When I went to put the strings on it though, the heaviest string, a 60, would not fit through the machine head due to the locking mechanism. I had to go out for another pack of strings, I got 11-52s this time round and they're great, there's still more than enough tension for tight, fast riffs in C standard tuning. I played one in a shop a few years back and didn't get on with the neck, which I remember being huge, but this one is quite thin and comfortable, it's Fender's "modern C" and as far as I know Fender never changed the neck on these throughout their lifetime so I'm not sure what was going on the day I played that JR Tele in shop.

The EMG 81/60 set is standard EMG tight, compressed and with loads of low-mid growl but a bit flat and lifeless on cleans, though the 60 is better than the old 85 that used to traditionally come in the neck position. It's a bit redundant though, the cleans will never be AAA grade and I really bought this guitar for rhythm parts, so it's really only played on the bridge pickup.

I love the way Telecasters look and feel. They bring out a different side to my playing I feel. This one is not exactly traditional, with it's modern pickups, non-plate bridge, locking tuners and deep body cut on the back, it's a fantastic guitar.

I like that Mastodon2. Quite different to the classic two single coil Telecasters more usually seen (like one of mine). I also find I play differently on a Telecaster; it's such a basic no frills feel. I even modified my first cheap Tele as it isn't worth selling, putting a humbucker on the bridge for a change to my standard one.

Where did you see the advert out of interest? I've been trying to sell my black Les Paul Studio and I put it on Gumtree late last night and have had lots of interest already. Seem like it might be a good place to sell through in future as I've a few other bits and pieces to get rid of.
