I've been drumming for 25years, and am pondering getting some V drums for studio/effects/writing.

Anyone got any experience or comments regarding suitability of the models between TD6 and TD9.

IANAD but I used to work in a music shop and spent a lot of time playing them - the TD9 is ok but I would look at trying to get a second hand TD12 instead. There's a huge difference between them and I think as an experienced drummer you'd find the feel of the TD9 a bit uncompromising. The TD12 is a great kit, the mesh heads feel much more realistic. I actually preferred it to the TD20 which seemed a bit bloated.

May be of some use to you...

I've got a Roland TD10 with the TDW-1 expansion card setup. It's an earlier model than the stuff you're talking about being the first V-Drum generation.

The fundamental design of the shells and mesh heads has not changed though for the newest generation kits. Coming from a basic Yamaha DTXPress I found the Roland pads to be excellent, the feel is different to a convential drum head but still very good.

Techniques like free sticking, press rolls etc all work just as they do on an acoustic kit.

Cymbals can be choked and in the case of the crash cymbals have sounds assigned to the bow and the edge, the ride cymbal allows sounds to be assigned to the edge, bow and bell so there's scope for a good deal of expression with them.

The one thing I would like is the new HiHat controller that ships with the later V-Drums - it won't work with the earlier "brain" but the limited try out I had at PMT showed it to be very impressive.

I hadn't played acoustic drums for 15 years until about 3 weeks ago when an impromptu jam session meant that I ended up playing one - the difference between it and the Roland in terms of feel was not so much that I couldn't play and neither would I say one was better than the other.

I too have the Roland TD10 with the TDW-1 and I understand it is regarded to have a better cymbal
sound set up than the TD12 and TD20. smile

I really can't fault it although I have not used it for any studio work.

If you want to hear / see a couple of videos that may help make your mind up about V Drums, try
these two which sold Roland to me, but they are both TD20 based.

Hi All drummers out there !!!!

just thought i would try a quick post here first as i use pitonheads for every thing else !! lol

is there any one out there who is an expert on roland hd3 v drums ???

just bought a second hand set off ebay , and it is great for my needs ,1st venture into drumming ( purely for pleasure ) but it does seem to have an annoying little fault , not knowing anything about them didn't know if someone could point me in the right direction ??

just in case , here's the fault :

hi hat pedal works fine in open position , but i have no sound in the closed position , tried all 3 cymbals , excactly the same , but the strange thing is if i take the jack plug out the cymbal and tap the jack plug with my finger the hi hat is perfect , open and closed , but cannot get a closed hi hat sound with the jack in any cymbal !!!!!! the foot pedal works fine on the double bass setting , so i am assuming thats ok !!! very strange
any help would be greatly appreciated
Many thanks
Les

I have an alesis kist and one of the key setup items is to calibrate the Hi-Hat pedal. Have a check of the manual to see if there is a procedure.

Other than that, hope you get it resolved.

If your kit is like my old TD6 then there should be two separate inputs - one for the HH controller and one for the HH pad, are you sure you have them connected correctly?

thanks for your replies

no unfortunately its not like a td kit , there is only one input on each ,

i have even tried switching the cables from the hi hat pedal to the bass pedal , to use as the hi hat pedal , but sill the same fault , so now i am assuming the fault is either in the " brain " or possibly in the multi connector wiring loom ????

does anyone one know if the wiring connector is standard on the roland kits ( a multi adaptor with 9 leads out of it )

many thanks
