I went to the Lyceum that night too! i remember not being able to see the band for the smoke! i was up on a balcony, great night. that was before i realised eldritch was a completely dick mind.. wink
But don't you think that Eldritch is one of those egos who is such a dick that he left the end of the spectrum and was/is, therefore, cool?

Do you 'get' what I mean?
oi cool

there is only one band and thats the cure the bestest in the world

closely followed by new model army who im seeing for the umpteenth time in december smile

that said am currently listening to the cult electric cd

Edited by eldritch on Friday 17th October 18:43
Sorry mate, but The Cure is 'goth for girls'. It's goth for Top of the Pops. It's goth for nice girls in Laura Ashley dresses to dance to to and feel that they are beng rebellious.

Electric wasn't a bad album; though, pretentiously enough, I'm more a Southern Death Cult guy wink

and robort is a god

so there
I must admit, my knowledge of the Cure extends no further than their (most popular) singles. I'm sure they are great.

I was at the hippy/biker end of the goth spectrum - listened to a lot of Velvet Underground, Doors, (early) Led Zeppelin, Hendrix as well as Joplin, Crazy Joe & the Fish, Iron Butterfly etc. I guess that's how Southern/Death/Cult, Sisters, Bauhaus, Medics and then, later, Zodiac Mindwarp, Nephilim, GBOA, PWEI etc became my contemporary listening.

Not sure how I came across the Bolshoi, but they were firm favourites too. "In the port of Amsterdam, there's a sailor who sings, of the dreams that he brings..."

Ok - time for some 'PHers who were spookily close 25 years ago' stuff.

Some lesser known bands - anyone see them live or recall anything by them?

The Scientists - Australian band, toured a lot with the Medics. Awesome sound.
Ring of Roses - Hippy/goth band from Devon/Cornwall way. Same stable as Ozric Tentacles.
The Whiplash Girls - Sudbury band. Had some great songs; unlucky to have not hit the big time.

There was also an Irish band on the circuit back then - name on tip of tongue - did some amazing guitar feedback sounds.

And from the States, from the same 'sound' as the Long Ryders, another real favourite of mine who toured here regularly, The Rain Parade. Their album 'Emergency Third Rail Power Trip' is awesome, though live, they were exponentially better!

I must have some multiple personality music disorder.. loved that bit too, and the punk stuff and the dub reggae scene that was rumbling about at that time (Scientist et al)... as well as some of the rock. (shock horror).
I know exactly what you mean. I think it's just an absolute passion for music created by people who are passionate about their music.

Never heard of Ring of Roses... Saw the Ozric Tentacles at Elephant Fayre. Did you watch the vid I posted earlier? of Devon's most famous Town Crier??
Cult Maniax?

Erm... yeah. That's..... quite a voice.

Into the valley was the Skids. As for Plastic Bertrand. No self-respecting punk (or person) would ever admit that!
Oops! memory not what it was - of course the Skids, Swords of a Thousand Men was Tenpole Tudor.

I never claimed to be a punk, but Plastic Bertrand was great (for that one track).

Another thing I remember from the era which has surfaced is the music snobbery there was around "<derisive snort> that's rubbish! they're not proper punk". Suppose we'll get the "I was a punk before you were" argument soon (The Tubes btw).
Snobbery - definitely. Notwithstanding the 'Cure dispute' I (purposely and admittedly) teased a previous poster about the Cult. I'm too young to have seen the Southern Death Cult, but plenty of people my age would sneer at followers of the Cult because they were so 'bandwagon'.

Similar snobbery within the ranks of the Sisters' followers. If you didn't see them at York Racecourse in 1979 you weren't a real fan.

HA HA HA!!! so did I!!! (maybe not gloss but it was white)
OK, we've had lots of mentions of our leather jackets.

What did you have on yours?

Mine had 'SISTERS' in white, writ large across the panel at the bottom of the back and then the Einsturzende Neubauten logo in gold in the main part of the back. On the right sleeve was the Medics 'laughing face' logo in silver ..... bugger.... can't remember what was on the left sleeve.

Not particularly arty, but did it all myself and was very pleased with the finished result.

Apart from 'The Cramps' on the right sleeve...
I had The Ruts 'Red Triangle' logo on one lapel and 'Naughty Rhythms' on the other. An obscure reference to a Tour that included Essex r'n'b/pub-rock/proto-punk legends Dr.Feelgood.
I had Killing Joke on the back of one, and the Cramps on another.

What about hair?

I had Siouxsie hair, a mohican, and a bleached mohawk... purely to piss my parents off. It looked st.
A big black hat - occasionally with yellow (kind of) paisley silk scarf tied round the band and hanging down the back. (Depended on where I was headed and which band I was going to be seeing).

Occasionally back-combed/hair-sprayed up, but my hair was never that long as I had to do 'pillar of the community' type stuff in 'real life' too rolleyes

In spite of real life, still managed 3 or 4 gigs or club nights a week during my 'peak' (16-19 yers old)

Jacket - Merciful release logo on the back,
I have, 'mercifully', remained un-tattooed (mainly because I'm a pain-wuss, probably), but in moments of bravado I always fantasised about have this as a full back tattoo. Imagined it would give a similar effect, upon people first seeing it, of the scene in Cape Fear when De Niro takes his shirt off.

V8mate, what do you drive?
At the moment, it's a poncey V8 - 2003 Merc S500L.

Had American V8s in my youth - '67 Mustang 302, '72 Mustang Mach 1, though my favourite was my first 'Yank': a '70 Mercury Comet. It was the 'little sister' to the Mustang, largest engine fitted was the 302 which I had. My Dad and I modded it: huge polished alloy 'tunnel ram' inlet manifold with dual, 650cfm four-barrel Holleys, full headers to cherry bombs and homemade side pipes (just appeared in front of rear tyres, didn't run along the sides), slot mags (super-wide rear, narrow fronts). The bonnet wouldn't shut so we had to cut a hole in it and fabricate a 'scoop' to go over the inlets.

As I said in the first post, I was still on 'L' plates with this car and was paying £260 per year insurance!

A teenager in the punk era....

The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall
The Fall

Best ever track - "Smile"
after 1986...

The Fall

There are others, too many to mention, but

"The Fall, always the same, always different"
I love the Fall - seen 'em twice - once in the early 80s when MES looked close to death and then about five years ago when he was actually dead but somehow still singing ...

Best track: Hip Priest ... decent others - hundreds to be honest but Man Whose Head Expanded, Hey Student, loads of 'em.

But if we'tre going back to late 70s/early 80s then stuff from A Certain Ratio, Monochrome Set, Diagram Brothers, early Japan, very early Simple Minds, Kraftwerk, Durutti Column, 23 Skidoo, all decent indie bands (before some got mainstream) and all very much seen on the gig circuit.

Remember driving to Bristol in my old Hillman Hunter with some washed up Billy mates to see The Monochrome Set at Dingwalls ... class.

I ahve some pics somewhere of mymate who in 1981 was the spit of David Sylvian from Japan (just prior to the Tin Drum album) - must try and scan it in ... he looks like a cross between Steve Strange/some Blitzkid and Sylvian ...
First saw them at The Factory in about 1987, but most recently at The Forum, Kentish Town a couple of years ago. I think Mark E. Smith was wearing the same silvery grey slacks.
He said something along the lines of 'It could be me and your gran, it will still be The Fall'. Seemed quite apt as the other band members looked about 15.

On a side note, was once out with a few mates and we saw Nigel Kennedy walking along street, just after Brix had left MES for him. He looked a bit worried when we all started chanting "Mark E Smith's going to kick your fking head in."

Bloody students, eh?
I was at that Forum gig as well. Can't remember how many other times I've seen the Fall, but MES once gave me the microphone as I was at the front so I got to do my rendition of "He is not appreciated...". I am a worse singist than he is, I can tell you!

ETA the quote was, when asked if this was the end of The Fall following one of their famous on-stage bust ups, "It could be me and your granny on bongos, it would still be The Fall"
