Still going with a new album out not so long ago. Talk about feeling old...

This is playing on the radio at the moment. Haven't heard it for years.

Excellent song. Fantastic riff.

I stumbled across this early this week. The first recorded version of the finest (IMHO obviously) song ever written. Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. music

Some guys in my sixth form tutor group had a band modelled on, amongst others, Joy Division.

This would have been 1983-85.

They 'adopted' Transmission and utterly crucified it.

Every fking day.

Ferg, do you remember a band from Sudbury called the Whiplash Girls?

1985-86ish. All guys, before you get excited!

I remember a lot of people talking about them, but never saw them. Remember Coggeshall's 'Disconnected'???

Nope. Don't ring any bells.

I lost all my gig recordings in a distant relationship 'escape'; recorded almost every gig I went to. Would love to hear some of their stuff again; they were never signed though, AFAIK, so no official releases.

Similarly, a band from the South West called Ring of Roses.

don't like to cattagorise music but after saying to someone I liked Dead Can Dance they asumed I was a goth. So this first tune from the first album snakes into this thread.

they really were something special, as were Cocteau Twins at that time

Just stumbled across this completely by accident - trip down memory lane regarding the venue for me (maybe Ferg too?)

This particular footage is from before my gig-going days, but when Essex University - my 'local' venue - was a major stop-over on the national gig circuit.

Amazing that it was captured on film - but it was such a great venue; proper up-close and intimate - here are AC/DC playing Essex Uni in 1978

It was part of either 'Rock Goes To College' or 'Sight And Sound In Concert' two excellent programmes which I think were on BBC2.
I take it you've seen the footage from the infamous 'Specials at Colchester Institute'...?

PS The best band in Colchester are at the Arts Centre next Saturday (14th).
Essex Rocks present the Essex Air Ambulance Benefit featuring Colchester Ska favoutites 'New Town Kings'. It was a sell out last year and easily the best gig I went to. www.myspace.com/newtownkingssmile

Awesome!

Shall we start writing letters to the BBC publishing dept to get that series digitised and released on DVD?

The ENTS team at Essex used to be so good; these days they think that a 30 minute set from Judge Jules is 'kewl' rolleyes

Just listened to the tracks on their Myspace site - very good - they haven't tried to reinvent the genre at all, just straight classic ska.

What's the door policy at the Arts Centre like these days? Would my son get in; he's 16, over 6', but still quite 'fresh faced'. I think he'd really like them too.
