I am such a nitwit - having found Boys DOn't Cry stuck in the CD player I thought it would be goood to see them play again - last time was 1995/6 I think. But no, they are playing in the US in April. Bit far!

I take it you went??
Sorry we never met, but since it was pretty full and I have no idea what you look like....LOL!

I hope you enjoyed NTK, I left soaked through from dancing down the front with my older daughter. The other three bands were decent enough, I liked the second one most I have to say, 'Fuzztone Lily' were very accomplished, but not really my sort of thing...

We were certainly there! Wasn't until we were en route that I realised I hadn't organised any kind of 'bumping into each other'.

By a process of deduction, were you the guy in the white t-shirt with a trio of (much better looking) brunettes? biggrin

The first band on could have been any wannabe indie band. Still at the 'bedroom jamming' stage though. Their track 'Standing in Line' was the only one which actually stood out in any way.

Halomobilo were the best support act. Vocalist had a great voice and a good stage personality too. His lead guitarist was pretty accomplished too.

Fuzztone Lily were a great band musically - I thought I was about to see the Fields of the Nephilim reincarnated from the intro to their first track, but they were massively let down by the vocalist. His voice had no power, no charisma and his style didn't suit the music the rest of the band were playing. He probably needs to sell himself as a solo artist in the James Blunt-style and let the band find themselves a frontman with a deeper voice; then head towards a generally rockier output.

Newtown Kings were great. Well worth the entry-price on their own. Was my son's first ever gig; he arrived full of trepidation and left full of La La World biggrin

Thanks for the recommendation mate thumbup

I was wearing a yellow 'Koopa' shirt with a red 'K' (Film Censor) logo on the front. I was certainly with three better looking brunettes!!

We stood about 1/2 -3/4 of the way back in the middle for the first three bands then Emma, Rosie and I went down the front.

NTK did 3 or 4 new ones and dropped a few favourites, but I trust you got an idea of the love Colchester has for them!!! LOL!!

The first album 'Sound of the New Town' is still available for £5 or so, well worth it for 'La La World', 'Take Hold Of Me' and (missing from last night's set) '(When I Look At) The Sky At Night'.

Glad your boy enjoyed it, what sort of stuff is he into? I'll recommend some local bands.....as you know, it's the way forward! LOL!

I'd just like to wade in (late as usual) & say that this thread is absolutely flipping hilarious. It's brought back more than a few memories as well, quality stuff!

I cut my teeth at a Killing Joke gig when I was 14 & have never looked back. In fact, I'm afraid to say I'm 40 & still have a mohican.

Favourite bands include Killing Joke (obviously), Flux Of Pink Indians, Icons Of Filth (R.I.P. Stig mate!), Crass, Discharge, Doom, Extreme Noise Terror, Sore Throat, Bad Brains, NomeansNo, Dr & The Crippens, Heresy, Concrete Sox, Steel Pole Bath Tub etc.

Did a stint as a roadie for Killing Joke around the 'Night Time'-'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns' era. Saw loads of gigs back in the day, Subhumans, UK Subs, Chaotic Discord, Conflict, AYS, Napalm Death, Ripcord, The Damned, Buzzcocks, Vibrators, Discharge, Exploited, Anal Ct, Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus, P.I.L., The Three Johns, The Birthday Party (genuinely terrifying!)... I saw the Sisters Of Mercy for 50p with a free bottle of Holsten Pils at the Ritz in Manchester, lol... & Dead Or Alive when they were Goths, black candles everywhere & Pete Burns with red & black cats-eye contact lenses, rofl. Adam & The Ants before they went all 'Top Of The Pops', also at the Ritz for 50p! They were a great live band at that time... Oh the memories. I WANNA GO BACK!!! laugh

Do your ears a favour!

Just found this....

The Bolshoi were, IMO, one of the best live acts of the mid-80s.

Here's a Filippino band covering one of their best tracks - incredibly well!

Dear Tym.

Please cut your mohican off. It is not punk anymore and worse than a combover. A grey mohover... that's what it is.

And you spell your name with a Y. Which makes you a haircut 100/visage fan. Not a punk.

Thanks.
Bye.

This thread just popped up in my contributions.

What a staggeringly ace set of bands to have seen.

I remember the Manchester Ritz very well, stoodent night was always a winner.

As for NoMeansNo, saw them loads of times, at the Manchester Boardwalk and also in Leeds at The Duchess, fan-fkin-tastic band, though Dad was always my favourite song. In the later years they stopped playing it live and given a chance I'd always go up to Rob and say 'I'll buy you a pint if you play Dad'. It got to the stage where he'd see me and straight away say 'It's alright I don't want a pint...'

Did you ever get into Alice Donut or the Jesus Lizard? Utterly stonking bands from that era, oh and Fugazi as well, saw them at the New Ardri Ballroom in Manc one night.

Then there were all the Steve Albini bands and off shoots. I even painted a blue 'R' on the back of my leather jacket!

Cracking times, surely do wish I could go back again.

In the days when a play on the radio didn't entitle you to play Arena venues......

Yep. When I'm Prime Minister I'm going to ban music venues holding more than 1,000 people.

Inspired.

I think around 450 would be good. Then the 'artistes' would have to do loads more work for their money.

I always look back with fond memories at gigs at the Marquee in Wardour St, which held, IIRC, 900. It was just brilliant.

Watched a bit of this year's Glastonbury - the front row of people were further away from the stage than the people in the building behind the Marquee! Shocking. If I'm at the front, I want to be leaning on the stage!

Brilliant thread I just wish I had spotted it earlier.

I was a Goth in my long since departed youth but don't think it's ever left me, I was and still am a massive Sisters of Mercy fan and like many others on here I dressed with the funky cowboy hat and shades everywhere I went laugh

Managed to blag our way backstage at most gigs we went to in the early 80's, Drank pints of Gin and grapefruit juice with the Sisters WTF, Wayne Hussey (when in the Mission) gave me his bootstraps but I think he was after something in return eek

At another Sisters gig my girlfriend at the time was checking peoples tickets and didn't recognise Eldritch and asked him for his ticket, he wasn't impressed hehe she still gets ribbed about it now.

Got backstage at a Nephilim gig that I can't even remember being at (drugs) apparently I was the designated picture taker that night but I honestly have no recollection of even being there.

Slept through the entire concert when at The Cocteau Twins (drugs)same girlfriend mentioned above was not impressed smile

Got thrown out of a Damned concert for shagging some bird behind the curtains although surprisingly she was allowed to stay in scratchchin

Got chatted up by Ann-Marie of The Skeletal Family and was well in when they backed up the Sisters but alas same girlfriend was again surprisingly unimpressed hehe

I could go on and on but I think I've incriminated myself enough smile

Leather jacket had the cover of Body and Soul on the back with the star and head on the sleeve and Rise and Reverberate on the bottom panel.

Happy happy days

I think most people had to take drugs to stay awake during their concerts!

It was an all seated affair In Edinburgh (I Think) name of the place will come back to me at some point, support act were instrumental and I remember deciding to tell them how st they were (3-4 rows from the front) guitarist wasn't amused hehe next thing I remember was the girlfriend elbowing me in the ribs to waken me up, came to rather groggily to see Liz Fraser on stage so said thanks to the bint for waking me up only for her to glower at me and say that's them fking finished laugh Bizarrely I remember the date 10th December 1984 probably memorable for the fact I slept in a phone box that night as I had pissed my girlfriend off that much smile

Just remembered the venue Edinburgh Usher Hall
