Lagartija Nick was actually my favourite Bauhaus track IN the 80s. I've only switched to In the Flat Field in recent years. Thanks for the link to that video though; I'd never seen that.

Mid 80's was my psychobilly era! Guanabatz, Frenzy, Demented Are Go, Long Tall Texans, Restless, Highliners, King Kurt. Most Saturday nights at the Klubfoot (Clarendon) in Hammersmith with my enormous hairspray-solid bleached white quiff! Cool!... at the time!

Still listening to psychobilly in my car every day!
Bing! Well remembered. Hammersmith Clarendon. Saw Zodiac Mindwarp, GBOA, Poppies etc there. That's where the 'beer over Clint' incident occured. So many of those pub venues seem to have disappeared (unless they have just moved elsewhere). Health & Safety rules? Remember the Greyhound in (erm....) Fulham Palace Road?

Did anyone use to frequent the indie night on Sundays at the gay club 'Heaven', under the Arches at Charing Cross station? Some promoter had hired the place to put on all of the top 'names' at the time - probably 1985. (They have weird bogs in gay clubs - like peeing against a mirrored wall!)

im sure you mentioned the doors and the cult....

my favourite doors song...........
Excellent. Didn't the Doors do a tour with Astbury on vocals? So funny to see him looking 'normal' - have never seen him like that. Though he looks more like Lou Reed than Jim Morrsion!

Great linky though!

Youtube tip: Just put 'Whistle Test' into the search function (covers all the Old and Grey variants then). Over a thousand results and all studio stuff, so clearer than amateur gig recordings.

Got this somewhere in my archives -
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wKt5TNXbHLo&feat...
Wow - the list of 'related videos' alongside it really threw up some other blasts from the past:

Skeletal Family
Xmal Deutschland
Danse Society
Sex Gang Children
Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry
Christian Death
Danielle Dax

Some great footage from the Batcave too, really shows off the 'look' and culture of the time http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=1k1Rhi0MSnI

Have spent the last few hours 'acquiring' it. Five to midnight and have 'Temple of Love' blaring out biggrin

(Thank heaven for detached houses!)

Great selection of tracks - plenty I know and plenty I don't!

You all have to listen to this - completely forgot about it. One of the most danceable/singalongable goth tracks ever!

Crank it up and get dancing!

It seems that pretty well known bands would play clubs and student unions in most regional towns in those days, and not just a few stadiums like they do today.
That is so true! Look at Ferg's picture a few posts back - Hanoi Rocks playing the social club of a factory in Colchester! And Essex Uni SU used to have one big 'indie' band after another back then too.

It seems that so many bands these days go from late-night radio straight to huge venues. I love small places, low ceilings, backrooms of pubs etc - any more than a 1000 capacity and all the intimacy of the music disappears. I think the biggest venues I've ever been to were the Odeon and the Palais in Hammersmith. Way too big!

My favourite of all time will always be the old Marquee in Wardour Street - absolutely perfect!

In terms of information, 'Sounds' was the place to find tour news. Does anyone know what the contemporary bible is?

The Duchess of York is now a mens clothes shop.
That is shocking. The Duchess was typical of the kind of venues I used to love going to.
Can't remember for the life of me which fecking bands I saw there though scratchchin

ETA
Has the market for small venues really gone? Surely, plenty of new bands still build their reputation on the live circuit; they can't all rely on myspace etc, can they?

That's a bit forward isn't it wink

Grew up in Colchester; moved away as young adult and have now come back to grow old disgracefully. Well, until I can afford to escape again, at least.

Not nearly as good as the original. Not even close. (IMO naturally, before the pro-Cure lynch-mob target me again wink )

I'd also like people's opinion on this track VVVV. I was a big fan of Ska at the time and think this is great modern interpretation of that genre. Comments....

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=s9P9UrjjvLI - Mr Hudson and the Library - Too Late, Too Late.
I liked a lot of the old ska, but that didn't 'twang my thang' (to quote GBOA)
Too smooth; real ska was more 'raw' and 'street'.

ETA for no particular reason that its great http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ2oXzrnti4
Both of them fall into my definition of raw. You really get the instrument sounds and there's a strong sense of passion in the lyrics, whether anger or angst or love etc. Hard to describe what I meant by 'raw'.

The 'Too late, too late' track actually reminded me more of this: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_cE6q84QWQc which is a more 'polished' sound and has none of the ska earthiness.

I love that track. Another "not raw" ska track - "Walking in the Sunshine", by Bad Manners.

Are we allowed to do our New Romantic stuff yet? smile
Yep - we have already had some in fact!
