Cool promo video - what do you reckon the budget was? £200? hehe

At least you get to see the band - modern promo vids often barely feature the group and are just the result of the director's frustrated (and missed) movie career!

Blimey - that's a blast from the past. They stuck around well into the 90s too, didn't they?

I stumbled across this early this week. The first recorded version of the finest (IMHO obviously) song ever written. Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. music

Some guys in my sixth form tutor group had a band modelled on, amongst others, Joy Division.

This would have been 1983-85.

They 'adopted' Transmission and utterly crucified it.

Every fking day.

I remember a lot of people talking about them, but never saw them. Remember Coggeshall's 'Disconnected'???
Nope. Don't ring any bells.

I lost all my gig recordings in a distant relationship 'escape'; recorded almost every gig I went to. Would love to hear some of their stuff again; they were never signed though, AFAIK, so no official releases.

Similarly, a band from the South West called Ring of Roses.

Just stumbled across this completely by accident - trip down memory lane regarding the venue for me (maybe Ferg too?)

This particular footage is from before my gig-going days, but when Essex University - my 'local' venue - was a major stop-over on the national gig circuit.

Amazing that it was captured on film - but it was such a great venue; proper up-close and intimate - here are AC/DC playing Essex Uni in 1978

Bit of Googling and just look at some of the gigs in the series!!!!!

Awesome!

Shall we start writing letters to the BBC publishing dept to get that series digitised and released on DVD?

The ENTS team at Essex used to be so good; these days they think that a 30 minute set from Judge Jules is 'kewl' rolleyes

PS The best band in Colchester are at the Arts Centre next Saturday (14th).
Essex Rocks present the Essex Air Ambulance Benefit featuring Colchester Ska favoutites 'New Town Kings'. It was a sell out last year and easily the best gig I went to. www.myspace.com/newtownkingssmile
Just listened to the tracks on their Myspace site - very good - they haven't tried to reinvent the genre at all, just straight classic ska.

What's the door policy at the Arts Centre like these days? Would my son get in; he's 16, over 6', but still quite 'fresh faced'. I think he'd really like them too.

I take it you went??
Sorry we never met, but since it was pretty full and I have no idea what you look like....LOL!

I hope you enjoyed NTK, I left soaked through from dancing down the front with my older daughter. The other three bands were decent enough, I liked the second one most I have to say, 'Fuzztone Lily' were very accomplished, but not really my sort of thing...
We were certainly there! Wasn't until we were en route that I realised I hadn't organised any kind of 'bumping into each other'.

By a process of deduction, were you the guy in the white t-shirt with a trio of (much better looking) brunettes? biggrin

The first band on could have been any wannabe indie band. Still at the 'bedroom jamming' stage though. Their track 'Standing in Line' was the only one which actually stood out in any way.

Halomobilo were the best support act. Vocalist had a great voice and a good stage personality too. His lead guitarist was pretty accomplished too.

Fuzztone Lily were a great band musically - I thought I was about to see the Fields of the Nephilim reincarnated from the intro to their first track, but they were massively let down by the vocalist. His voice had no power, no charisma and his style didn't suit the music the rest of the band were playing. He probably needs to sell himself as a solo artist in the James Blunt-style and let the band find themselves a frontman with a deeper voice; then head towards a generally rockier output.

Newtown Kings were great. Well worth the entry-price on their own. Was my son's first ever gig; he arrived full of trepidation and left full of La La World biggrin

Thanks for the recommendation mate thumbup

Just found this....

The Bolshoi were, IMO, one of the best live acts of the mid-80s.

Here's a Filippino band covering one of their best tracks - incredibly well!

Yep. When I'm Prime Minister I'm going to ban music venues holding more than 1,000 people.

Inspired.

I think around 450 would be good. Then the 'artistes' would have to do loads more work for their money.
I always look back with fond memories at gigs at the Marquee in Wardour St, which held, IIRC, 900. It was just brilliant.

Watched a bit of this year's Glastonbury - the front row of people were further away from the stage than the people in the building behind the Marquee! Shocking. If I'm at the front, I want to be leaning on the stage!

Thread resurrection...

After an outing to see the Sisters of Mercy on their 30th birthday tour just over a year ago and, in spite of enjoying the show, wondering if it would have been any different a spectacle had it simply been a tribute band playing, I'm throwing caution to the wind again and have grabbed a couple of tickets to see Pete Murphy play an evening of Bauhaus material in Islington in July.

Anyon else going along?

I have two tickets to see Pete Murphy play an evening of Bauhaus material in London on 19th June. The gig's sold out.

I also booked a double room in the hotel right next door. (Premier Inn)

Unfortunately, a last minute opportunity to go to Le Mans has arisen so I can't use either. Anyone wanna haggle me a goth night out on the cheap?

Will split tickets from hotel if you only want one or the other.
