Sure they've done a number of poppy songs (some good, some not so) but the vast majority is dark stuff. Although, stuff since Wish hasn't been great and there was Japanese Whispers in the 80s, we defo don't talk about that
I listened to Sisters of Mercy the other day, big mistake, very cheesy, best left in the past. However, Pornography and Disintegration, still stunning to this day. Disintegration is probably the best album ever made ever and I'll not hear any different
i lost interest in the cure after 'the walk' - hated everything after.. but the likes of 'charlotte somtimes', 'M', Play for Today are just CHOONS! hours and hours i spent, in my little bedroom, with a red lightbulb in, drinking woodpecker cider..... wonderful.
i used to walk through the woolwich foot tunnel to get to college, i remember singing along on my CD walkman, 'fat man' by SDC, when i reached the lift, the jamaican lift attendant told me, very politely, he didnt think i could sing... ha! bless im....

I must admit, my knowledge of the Cure extends no further than their (most popular) singles. I'm sure they are great.and robort is a god
so there
I was at the hippy/biker end of the goth spectrum - listened to a lot of Velvet Underground, Doors, (early) Led Zeppelin, Hendrix as well as Joplin, Crazy Joe & the Fish, Iron Butterfly etc. I guess that's how Southern/Death/Cult, Sisters, Bauhaus, Medics and then, later, Zodiac Mindwarp, Nephilim, GBOA, PWEI etc became my contemporary listening.
Not sure how I came across the Bolshoi, but they were firm favourites too. "In the port of Amsterdam, there's a sailor who sings, of the dreams that he brings..."

Hmm, I was of in a different direction I guess as I got caught up in the whole SKA/Two Tone thing, good times
I must have some multiple personality music disorder.. loved that bit too, and the punk stuff and the dub reggae scene that was rumbling about at that time (Scientist et al)... as well as some of the rock. (shock horror). Ok - time for some 'PHers who were spookily close 25 years ago' stuff.
Some lesser known bands - anyone see them live or recall anything by them?
The Scientists - Australian band, toured a lot with the Medics. Awesome sound.
Ring of Roses - Hippy/goth band from Devon/Cornwall way. Same stable as Ozric Tentacles.
The Whiplash Girls - Sudbury band. Had some great songs; unlucky to have not hit the big time.
There was also an Irish band on the circuit back then - name on tip of tongue - did some amazing guitar feedback sounds.
And from the States, from the same 'sound' as the Long Ryders, another real favourite of mine who toured here regularly, The Rain Parade. Their album 'Emergency Third Rail Power Trip' is awesome, though live, they were exponentially better!

Erm... yeah. That's..... quite a voice.
That was you, wasn't it
Some seminal tunes that I recall from my youth - and still have many on my iPod:
Teenage Kicks - Undertones
Ca Plane pour moi - Plastic Bertrand
Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World
Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
London Calling and Clampdown - The Clash
2-4-6-8 Motorway - Tom Robinson band
Roadrunner - Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
Into the Valley - Tenpole Tudor
Really Free - John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett
Most memorable gig was Siouxsie and the Banshees at the Albert Hall, started off with Stravinsky's Firebird and went into Dear Prudence, it was videoed I think as I vaguely recall seeing some of it later on.
Also saw New Order shortly after Ian Curtis died - who - for the record - I have always regarded as a tt for leaving his girlfriend (wife) while pregnant for some other woman.
