Has anyone ever hired a famous band/singer for an event?

If you have I'd be interested to hear how you got in touch and the rough costs involved.

A friend of mine looked into hiring Paul Weller for an evening a few years back.

£20k (plus costs) was the going rate apparently.

To book a band, you just need to find out who their agent is and just call or email. A quick google can normally provide this for you.

How much do they cost, well thats a bit like saying how much does a car cost - from a few hundred pounds for a semi famous singer to many thousands for a top band. It can also depend on what type of event you want them for

Who were you thinking of?

John Otway played my 25th birthday party at a complete dive in Stockport called Peaches. I'd been to se him in Leeds and got talking to his manager, discussed getting a gig sorted on the other side of the hills.

Frankly, it was a top fvcking laugh, I sold tickets at £5/head and made enough for me to fly to Thailand on a one way ticket and still had $200 change in my pocket!

The night was a resounding success, in fact a friend contacted me last year to say that he'd been to the best gig ever in Seven Oaks to see none other than John Otway.

Depends a little on what you are looking for, if it's a small band for a few hundred people at a wedding or birthday then go for the old timers or local bands, if you're after a stadium full of people then that's right out of my league.

I was thinking of an 80s singer/band. Not too sure which one, but it's for our wedding and would be great if we could arrange something. I wouldn't actually mind just a singer doing a few songs, although obviously it would have to be worth their while. (I am looking into booking a "normal" band, with this in mind).

If it were 2-4k it would be great, but I'm not paying stupid money for someone to sing a few songs and say ta-taa. After all, it's a wedding not a gig.

edit: Was thinking along the lines of Tony Hadley doing a few of the old Spandau songs a bit later in the evening - Gold / True / Through the Barricades / I'll fly for you etc. (No I don't listen to The Best of Spandau Ballet on a regular basis hehe)

Looks like you may have difficulty hiring him for a Fri/Sat night as he does a radio show. Could always email him via this though.

Well, a tribute band can cost 6-8k for a night, so the real thing might be a bit much if they're still selling records. Probably cheap enough to hire some one or two hit wonders though....

Would it not be better to hire a known band who aren't big at the moment who would be in need of the work? Or perhaps a tribute band?

I seem to recall that when Sting was hired by an ex-client of mine for a launch party he charged a cool £400k. That was the rumour anyway. Seems excessive to me; but you never know, the rumour could be founded on fact.

Pah... that's just more money than sense... a cool £1/2mil - bks to that, I'd rather have Otway on stage entertaining with farty noises and giving everyone a laugh, let's face it at a wedding by the time the band come on most people are half cut, who wants to see a serious musician? You want some one that is going to get the crowd in tears and remember the night for the rest of their lives!

400K... fvking 'ellers like...... that's just silly.
