I have been a DM fan from my youth whilst enjoying many other genres of music however I am yet to be convinced by their latest offering 'Sounds of the Universe'.

Any DM fans out there? If so does this album grow on you?

They were on Jools Holland on Tuesday night, and again tonight (BBC2).

Although I've never ever been a fan of theirs, I was quite impressed with what they did.

But that said - the guitarist is doing a pretty good effort at being the next Keith Richards.

I will try to catch that on BBCi if its available thanks for the heads up.

I think they were trying to use old synth sounds as per the early 80's but for me the majority of the tracks were far too disjointed.

Shame as a lot of their work translates well into dance when it is remixed.

I was a huge DM fan up until the "Songs of Faith and Devotion" album - started going downhill in my opinion from then.

Biggest highlight for me was seeing them at Wembley Arena during the "Violator" tour. One of the best live gigs I have seen.

Managed to see them at Crystal Palace on the SOFAD tour then later on at the NEC for Playing the Angel.
All the crowd seemed to want was the old tracks ie never let me down again etc. at both concerts.

New album is def a grower but I find that will all their albums now.

Dave Gahans last solo album is still my fav from the past few years.

Gave up with Dave after Dirty Sticky Floor - expected better after playing the angel, I personally like for a bad term more beat orienated tracks ie most of Violator.

Good spot but I think Kieth Richards is in better nick than Martin Gore.

SOTU is a grower, had it in the car since it was released and, a couple of tracks aside it`s pretty good.

Not a patch on SOF&D though.

Same here. Was a huge fan of theirs in the '80s, but Violator was the last Depeche Mode album I bought. I'm glad for them that they're still in business though.

They have a guitar player now? And it's Martin?!??? Next thing you know they'll have a drummer!!

hehe

I was surprised to learn on Wikipedia that Alan Wilder had played a real drum kit on Clean. In the 18 odd years I've had that album I'd never even noticed!

SOTU is a classic DM album......it grows on ya the more you listen.,..gota say this is extremly good considering the stuff Dave Gahan has been mixed up in over the last 15 years.....drugs and all that.......you can hear him on jools hollands show saying he is dealing with his demons day by day

I Think Playing the Angel is a classic!! certainly better than "Ultra" and "Exciter" which have only a few stand out tracks. As for "SOTU" It is a grower with "Wrong" the obvious Single but "Spacewalker" and "corrupt" also stand out.

They went downhill after Violator.

Just today (funnily enough) I was listening to "101" (Recorded live at the Pasadena Rosebowl in June '88)

Fantastic album.

Has to be Gary Numan really... heavier, darker, miles better. DM have had some good moments but only when Gahan was doing the serious drugs. They've got all twee and happy again, and thats no good.
