Dear Meeja,
"102000" he exclaims and "stored in other peoples...".
So what do you do when you get that "I really need to hear X by the Ys" feeling? Do you know where it is? Are you a regular visitor to friend's garages Please tell me that you have each fitted with a tracking system and cross indexed in a database the size of Google's server farm
Or maybe you've just got a good memory.
I get really cranky when I can't find a tune I know I've got and I want to hear NOW,
regards,
Jet
Most of the stuff stored at other locations is the crap that I have receieved from pluggers and reps. Mostly junk, but as I have said, I am terrible at chucking stuff out."102000" he exclaims and "stored in other peoples...".

Some stuff in storage has already been put on My PC (around 100gB worth @320Kbps)
As for indexing...... A good(ish) memory
As I have taken advantage of other folk's storage for years, it is on my agenda to take up space at one of these "Big Yellow" type storage places. There are a couple within five minutes of home, and it may help take the strain off a couple of friendships!
The really odd bit is that I don't listen to an enormous amount of music at home, as I spent many years doing so at work. Mainly Radio 4 and Radio 5 at home these days!

I did once perform a count of CDs for insurance purposes, and stopped when I reached 102,000
Respect.I used to live with two mates, one whose collection is about 3 times the size of mine and one whose collection is about 5 times the size of mine.
So probably about 40K total.
Insurers wouldnt touch us, the only one that would insisted we take photographs of each CD.
Which as you can imagine was a complete and utter non-starter.
So So Glad that I have transfered most of mine to digital format now... just need to do the rest and upload the album covers, anyone know where I can get them from?
Friend of mine has 100k of songs but I suspect that he is downloading entire CDs for one single song he wants and his broadband is doing it 24/7.

does anyone else have a minidisc player?

what a waste of time that was!
Disagree. At the time, it was a superb idea..... before recordable CDs were commonplace, it made life really easy for some gigs.I used to MC basketball matches in the Budweiser League (That shows how long ago it was!) and in it's very Americanised way, I used to play snippets of music all the way through the games.
I edited the tracks at home, and them recorded them to minidisc - which gave me almost instant access to tracks when at the games.
A superb idea that worked really well.
As it became so cheap and easy to record CDs yourself, Minidisc just withered and died.... but I still have a portable Sony Minidisc player/recorder
And a rackmount Denon machine
Regarding the volume of material available, I don't know exactly, but the last time I reckoned it up by the shelf feet of vinyls, about 15,000 + albums / 12" 3,000 CDs, 2,000 7" and about 18,000 ripped and d/l tracks on a 1Tb and a 0.5Tb drive.
Oh, and a lot of tape cassettes this time.

What genres do you tend you listen to the most? I presume you have a very eclectic taste as that amount of music would be very deep for just one or two different styles.Oh, and a lot of tape cassettes this time.
