Damm, thought I was going to be the 1st to say Kerry King.
Kerry King- FTW.
Most others were mentioned pages back, although Van-Halen has skills.

He's not even the best guitarist in Slayer!

Without a doubt, Kerry hasn't come up with a good solo since Divine Intervention IMHO and even then I'd say that Tom has far more imgaination and variation to his playing. Just listen to the 2 solos in Seasons In The Abyss for proof. King just seems to play the same solo with slight variations especially over the last 2 albums and he is the only person I know to use his wah pedal more than Kirk Hammett!

I am surprised there has been no mention of Kurt Cobain - he may not of been technially brilliant but sometimes less is more....

[b]But? he made no.12 on Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest guitarists of All Time

Being a great guitarist is more han just being able to play highly technical stuff, decent riffs are more important that guitar solos.

My personal favorites are:
Adam Jones (Tool)
Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains)
Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction - check out the solo on 3 Days)
Tom Morello (RATM / Audioslace / Street Sweeper Social Club )
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)

I think John 5 or joe Satriani are very good - but I only play their CDs occaisonally...

I agree. For me what makes a great guitarist is the interaction between the other instruments. It's not all about how fast you can bang notes out on a bit of wood with wires on it but how you play with time and create space with the other elements of the music. Cobain was pretty good at this, Hendrix was more than good at it as is John Frusciante to name but a few...

Talking of less = more

Peter Green
Peter di Stefano

Although I don't listen to 'Mac and Porno for Pyros as often as I used to, I must admit.
