Frank Zappa
Shoot me in the head with a massive gun, but for some strange reason I've never listened to Zappa properly, where would be a good place to start?
He's got a massive back catalogue but I reckon it's best to start with his more accessible stuff like 'Joes Garage', 'The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life' or 'Broadway The Hardway'.

Alternatively there's Hot Rats which is basically 45 minutes of guitar solo recorded, according to Zappa folklore, for Executive irritation biggrin

Cheers

Cheers DC, I'll spend some time on Amazon I think, I find their reviews on this sort of stuff are very good
I reckon a great way "in" to Zappa is to go for the more accessible as noted. Particularly Sheik Yerbouti, or Joes Garage 1 (followed by 2 and 3).

Once you've been amused by the lyrics during the late 70s/early 80s period, you will be hit by how incredible the music is, and then you're on the slippery slope to listening to the whole back catalogue. I envy you for being able to listen to that stuff for the first time!

No Ry Cooder yet?

And for my t'penneth worth, Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze is damn fine too. Great phrasing. Look at Another Nail For My Heart solo as an example.

I could rabbit on for ever about how great Squeeze, and its constituent members, are...

Rodrigo y Gabriela are staggering, glad I'm not the only one who's of that opinion!

Anyone else here think you can't have this conversation without at least mentioning Bill Nelson?

For that matter how about Wilko Johnson, I was listening to some old Doctor Feelgood stuff (after seeing the current incarnation live at the weekend - no they're not really the same band without Lee Brillaux but they're still very, very, very good at what they do...) and I've got to say Wilko really is an absolute one off...

Wilko had/s a fabulous style. Saw them many times back in the day. Most of the crowd will now have died due to passive smoking.

yes Good call on Nick Drake - posthumously lauded as a great singer/songwriter but equally was a hugely underated guitarist

Even though he is a cheesy, arrogant tt, Yngwie Malmsteen is still a darn good player:

Good Choice....

Have you heard the new Alice In Chains track yet?

The video for it is streaming on their website - it sounds very good.
