Since I was about 15 I have been listening to Metallica (20 years now) and they always impress me. From thrash metal to melodic ballads, guitar solos to drum solos I simply don't dislike a single track they have released.

Sitting in the PH office listening to 'And Justice For All' I realised the album was made in 88, and still sounds great today. IMO, they are the most rounded, talented and enjoyable bands of their genre. Discuss smile

I'd agree 100%.

They are simply brilliant. Seem them 5 times live now and they never dissapoint.

The only band that in my mind come close is Iron Maiden - but looking through there collection they have some real dogs.

'Tallica on the toher hand the only albums i'm not a massive fan of are Reload and St Anger, and neither of them are terrible.

Even their poncy stuff like S&M is good, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and Justice for all are simply amazing albums.

Apart from S&M I'm not a fan of anything after And Justice....But anything before that was awesome. On a technical note they could really have done better than Lars but I guess as he started the band it'd be hard getting rid of him. Creeping death one of the best songs ever.

Very good band let down by Kirk Hammet who is a very poor guitar player. (OK, he has a few good moments)

Only if you have a very narrow definition of all round.

They're extremely competent but as you said: "from thrash metal to melodic ballads" via where exactly - that's all they do. Loud/soft, fast or slow, start finish, up/down. Nowt in between like. And any band that still has drum solos....that's when we used to go and get another pint.

So absolutely no way are they the best all-round rock band, whatever that is. Not anything I think too many people dream about in their bedrooms. Know what ......one day I'm gonna be in the best all-round rock band ever.

As for the suggestion of Mr Big - you kiddin? Competent for sure but over-produced and totally without soul or joy. Footballer rock. Rock by numbers
as recommended in the Puffin book of rock. Wedding party rock, karaoke rock, BBQ rock, Teach-yourself rock, Butlins rock, seaside rock. (Not sure about the last one).

All IMHO of course.

Kirk's playing is embarrasingly bad.

Yeah i'll not disagree there, but what about X factor and Brave New World.

As an aside Blaze Bailey was gigging in a very small pub in Nottingham not too long ago.

Ah how the mighty are fallen.

Are you not basing your opinion of Mr Big on their one big hit here? Most of their stuff was a world away from it.

But in terms of best ever, The Foo Fighters are pretty damn good. But how wide is your definition of a rock band? Do the Who count? cos you'd have to go a long way to find better songs, and Entwistle's base playing was immense.

They're not a bad call, but I would disagree. However, whether Kirk is a poor guitar player matters not one bit, it's not as if Lars is the greatest drummer either.

..I think I am one of the few people who likes St. Anger, nevermind likes St. Anger and doesnt like Death Magnetic!

How about Queen?

The best all round rock band? Are we talking metal bands or rock bands?

In my book, it's not Metallica - although they are one of the best bands around.

On todays scene I'd say it's a toss up between the Stones, AC/DC, Van Halen and Pink Floyd.

And over time - I'd add Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and of course, the greatest of them all .... Led Zeppelin.

Although an honourable mention should go to Mamas Boys thumbup

Hey!

..Just so you know, I love Iron Maiden and would choose them over 90% of other bands (including Metallica and definitely over Queen), just dont think they have a universal appeal which I think 'best all round' band should have. I'd class them as 'Maiden as Metal as opposed to rock too. I dont do 'bests' though.

Another +1 here.

An embarrassing surfeit of scalar knowledge without any soul. Friedman kicks his arse.

As for the best all-round rock band.............scratchchin
