Anything Bernard Edwards played on had a fine bassline. All the Chic stuff, Everybody Dance, Good Times, I want your love.. Some of the Sister Sledge tracks he played on. His early death was a great shame.

Another bosting bass line was I shoulda loved ya by Narada Michael Walden, that bass line is just amazing.

Moving on to early Dance, Georgio Moroder did a great job on Donna Summers' I feel love.... Fantastic.

I'll second that nomination for Guy Pratt. His slap improvs during '87-'94 live performances with Floyd on Another Brick pt.2 are probably my all time favourite things that anyone ever did with a bass guitar.

Er. The originals better. Graham Maby is excellent. Frank's just ripping him off.

Meanwhile,

Gigantic - The Pixies (Kim Deal)
Psycho killer - Talking Heads (Tina Weymouth)
Night on Bare Mountain - Mussorgsky
Babooshka - Kate Bush (John Giblin)

I can pull plenty of stuff I like out of this thread, but I've come away disappointed, because of a notable omission (unless I've missed it).

Saw Primus back in the day when they supported Rush (1979 I guess)

Anyway - I've just read through the first 4 pages of this thread, and absolutely no mention of anything played by the likes of ...

John Myung (there IS no-one better - FACT)
Geddy Lee
Justin Chancellor

I saw Tony Levin get a brief mention, but check out the song 'Acid Rain' live at LA by Liquid Tension Experiment on youtube

Just sayin'
Speaking of Rush, YYZ has a hell of a bass score.

Myung might as well be a MIDI track these days. His playing is about as expressive. When was the last time he displayed any creativity? Probably when he wrote Solar Flare. His live solos just typify that he has no real melodic or harmonic drive in his playing. He does an admirable job of following whatever Petrucci wants him to do but I think it's fair to say the 'quiet man of Dream Theater' has faded into the background over the years behind the strong personalities of Portnoy and Petrucci.

I've never understood the fanboi love for Myung that exists as a separate entity to love of the band. He is just a component of the band and nothing more. I take onboard the arguments that maybe there is no place in DT for a bassist with a voice, but Myung doesn't do anything spectacular or special and what he does do, many could emulate so as to be identical.

You might not appreciate or like his style, but he's got plenty of skill, he's one of the best in the world, that's not really up for debate.

Also, you know Portnoy hasn't been in Dream Theater for years, yes?
He's one of the best prog metal bassists in the world but he doesn't make the cut of the top tier of bassists by a long shot. There are hundreds of session players that could nail his stuff, and thousands more beneath them that could do the same. He's not a bad player when it comes to playing what he's given but it takes a creative spark to be on top.

Also, yes, I know Portnoy left DT years ago (I also know that he wants to come back, but that ship has sailed). When Petrucci and Portnoy were together they were the creative driving force for the band (and that may be a bad thing since they became stylistically less diverse and less creative as time went by). Since Portnoy left, it looks as though Petrucci still remains in charge. His departure hasn't suddenly brought Myung to the fore. I suppose Myung has quite happily taken a backseat for many years now and doesn't see a need to change.
