For those from the Grunge era, you might like the acclaimed: Screaming Trees - Dust, or Mudhoney - Piece of Cake
good call

prefer Superfuzz Bigmuff though
Saw them live about '95 on the My Brother the Cow tour... came back black and blue from that gig hehe

What was Green River's EP called? That was quite good back in the day...
rehab doll was the one that nearly put Subpop under

but there was a couple of others
Saw Mudhoney at the Barrel Organ (tiny pub) in Brum when Superfuzz was released. Great Album and an intense evening.

I'll add Thank You by Royal Trux to the list, if you want to know where Jack White's new band the Dead Weather get their sound then look no further.

Also Perfect Prescription by Spacemen 3.

And finally, Teenager Of The Year by Frank Black.

New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Pigeonhole. A sort of late 80's Manchester sound - don't really know why they never got a wider audience.

Stakka Bo - Supermarket. Cool groovey stuff!

Cheers

Erm...the OP DID say "never had a big enough platform to reach the mainstream consciousness."

...so something tells me all of those are out (as are Pearl Jam and Led Zep, regardless of how good they are - people already KNOW about those guys...).

Can we keep it to just the 'unknown' stuff please guys...more interesting that way!

Off the top of my head, some of my favourites. Well known, but not exactly mainstream.

Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen - Achingly beautiful, if sad, acoustic folky stuff.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless - Droney, dreamy, detached, highly original 'shoegaze' wall of noise music.
Sonic Youth - Sister - Similar to the above.
Autechre - Tri Repetae - Cold, austere, minimalist, emotive ambient techno/electronica.
Belle and Sebastian - The Boy with the Arab Strap - Chirpy, literate, scottish acoustic-pop.
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska - see Songs of Leonard Cohen.
Television - Marquee Moon - 70s post-punk, cracking musicianship.

You know what, I have taken your advice and ordered Pink Floyd - The Wall as I have never heard it, apart Brick in the wall, and I am sick of people going on about them!

I am 39 is that normal not to have heard them or are they past my age group?

Or am I a ?

ETA Also Pearl Jam - Ten and, er, Pink - Funhouse!

>rummages through iTunes<

Explosions In The Sky, All Of A Sudden I Miss Everyone: glorious beautiful ecstatic noise, with no singin'!

The Orb, The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld: the ultimate chillout album. Two hours of ambient dub perfection.

Gomez, Bring It On: that singing voice, which sounds like the product of thirty years of gargling whisky and broken glass. In a bloke who was about twenty at the time.

Metallica, Master Of Puppets: never subsequently bettered by the band, with only the "black" album coming close. Possibly the defining speed/thrash album of the 80s.

The Cure, Staring At The Sea: The Singles: An excellent and varied sampler of the Cure's stuff up to 1985. With the exception of Disintegration, this is their best stuff.

Shpongle, Tales Of The Inexpressible: final proof that there is absolutely nothing to do in Somerset other than do unfeasible amounts of mushrooms and make wonderful psychedelic music. Beautiful, clever and quite brilliantly executed.

Also, my 'unknown favourites':-
- Corrosion of Conformity: Deliverance - awesome stoner-metal (think QOTSA with attitude - QOTSA IIRC were inspired by CoC) which never made the mainstream. Still one of my favourite bands...

Marvellous band, although I'd have picked Vote With A Bullet from Blind.
