it`s weird in that the production is almost naked, but it works fantastically.i am obsessed with production quality to the point i can`t even listen to an ipod with all this compressed file nonsense.some albums paradoxically would sound worse if the production was better.if you know what i mean.??

i love to hear little clicks and scrapes of people playing instruments that you only hear through headphones - e.g that little click of the pick before the riff to Brown Sugar

Off the top of my head, some of my favourites. Well known, but not exactly mainstream.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless - Droney, dreamy, detached, highly original 'shoegaze' wall of noise music.
Brilliant call, turns out the album was released the same week I was born smile

I'd say these are some albums everyone needs to hear:

The Libertines - The Libertines
Radiohead - Kid A
Radiohead - In Rainbows

And any of the first 3 of Mogwai's albums.
Speaking of Mogwai, check out their early EPs - EP+6 and Ten Rapid. If you like the first 3 albums you'll like these, in a similar vein to Young Team and Come on Die Young.

In terms of post-rock, try Jackie O Motherfker. Some of the Constellation Records stuff is good too, eg A Silver Mount Zion.

jesusbuiltmycar.....yes, i think that was the name of it,i got a live dvd and there were bits of it in there.kinda like film score-very dramatic atmospheric but absolutely fantastic.if this side of nin is your bag a good lead is an album called lunz.it`s a collaboration between film score mainman tim story and hans -jochim rodelius.not as "heavy" but very moody .very subtle, hugely listenable and a 10/10 on my list.

Ooooooh good topic, hope this one runs!

My recommendation is Deaf, Dumb and Blind by Clawfinger. They make RATM sound like Kylie and NWA like Back Street Boys. If you like Body Count, you will love Clawfinger. Oh and the lyrics warning sticker is entirely necessary on this one...
Some of the tracks are great and the musicianship is very good, but I thought the Lyrics warning was due to their at times poor grasp of English...

Surprised no one has mentioned

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
An incredibly bleak concept album and without a doubt NIN at their best!

hehe Very good! I guess I always though RATM sounded fake compared to Clawfinger, no idea why, just never got into RATM. Do like NIN though!

Yes.

I had a superb night out when I went to see them. I won some tickets from GLR and turned up at the venue, only to realise it was some kind of record company arranged gig in a tiny venue and with a free bar all evening.

Amazing night out.

good call i don`t know why shinoda gets a fake tag.i find his music honest and intelligent, definately the drive behind linkin park.
Hell yes mate, I really like that album, it's a lot better than I was expecting it to be. I really hope FM tours over here at some point.

i really want to see more collaborations with the likes of busta and jay z.i love stuff like the judgement night soundtrack but shinoda`s blending of the two styles of rock and rap seems to take wider influence, seeming less obvious and more rounded and full.an intersting dvd if you haven`t seen it is the making of meteora that came with the album on release.you could see what was starting to happen during the writing processes.(i think reanimation was about this time as well)

Orbital - Brown
Chemical Brothers - Surrender
Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman
VA - Cafe Del Mar Volume One

A decade of dance music in under 4 hours.
You should add Leftfield to the list

Don't think I've seen this classic slice of post-punk mentioned...
Iggy Pop - The Idiot

Few others...

Primal Scream - XTRMTR
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
Nas - Illmatic

Slightly different to most of the recommendations on this thread:

Coldcut - "70 Minutes of Madness". Showed what could be done with a mix CD, just beat mixing a few house records wouldn't cut the mustard any more.

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.... Pushed the art of sampling forward.

Jeff Mills - Live at the Liquid Room.

Thought of a couple of others.

Lots of people know the Beastie Boys but not so many people are familiar with their best album, Paul's Boutique.

Digable Planets - Reachin' - Better than De La Soul or any other daisy age hip-hop.

I've got the deadringer album, people I know with the later albums have said there not as good.
