Is it an acronym or a shortening?

Or, as I suspect, a cultural shorthand for a particular genre of popular music wink

Rapping - speaking. To Rap - To Speak.

"Slang. to talk or discuss, esp. freely, openly, or volubly; chat." Dictionary.com

I once heard it stood for "Rhythmic American Prose". I wasn't sure whether to believe the person who said it, though.

I'm going with the silent "C", anyway.

Not necessarily, Eminem for example does chuck in some pretty clever lines sometimes.

The above quotes should adequately explain it.

Or perhaps the black American underclass's ability to achieve success and wealth. Or isn't that what the OPer meant? biggrin

Gosh, you're open minded...

Rap ultimately spawned from jazz & blues in the same way rock, and just about all other forms of modern music have done - just because you don't like it, does not mean it does not have any musical significance.

I'm not a fan of rap myself btw wink

2 rap lines that i think are genius:

zach de la rocha in his new band one day as a lion-" i`m targeting more foreheads than a priest on ash wednesday"

i can`t remember who this was but it`s the greatest rap line of all time-"i`m comin` at you just like a built up shoe, see i got mad soul" genius!!

There are thousands of great rap lines.

I personally love "Sign of the time we elapse when a primate climb up a spine and attach..."

Aesop Rock. Quality.

Yeh but I quite like jazz and blues. In fact I quite often tell people to forget who a piece of music is by and just listen to it, rather than assuming that becasue its by an artist in a genre they dont like they wont like it.

And I often do this myself, however I make an exception for rap and related music-(spoken rather than sung stuff thats like poetry and sounds like it should rhyme but the artist cant pronounce the words correctly so it all sounds so forced --- the streets are a good example) -because I think the pain I would have to go through to find something I like would not be worth the reward.

And it clearly does have musical significance I cant deny that, although the term musical here is somewhat open to debate.
