Buy it and enjoy it as a seperate and new Muse album, not as Plug in baby part 2.
This is the key point - a guy with the talent of Matt Bellamy is never going to be happy just churning out the same stuff, a lot of the 'fans' on here need to realise this an move on - the band has !
Moved on?!! you won't find a bigger fan of Matt than me and the reason for this is his stupendous stage ability. I could imagine myself nodding off listening to him try and do anything with this material. He and the band are exemplary musicians, I see nothing exemplary here
Monsieur Ouef - you have contradicted yourself there mon ami. I'd have thought a big fan would at least be able to stay awake through a live performance of a band's current album hehe

Anyway let's not get into a pissing contest - I do kind of see where you are coming from in that this album lacks a bit of bite compared to previous efforts but I get narked with folk complaining when a band change direction. You wouldn't want them rehashing past albums over and over would you ? There lies the road to sterility...

Ironically I think the best old-Muse-a-like material I've heard recently is the guitar solo in the new Lost Prophets song, sounds like it's been lifted straight from Matt Bellamy's note pad. hehe

That's the point Dibbers, as a fan I am absolutely capable of appreciating the less commercial stuff but this has nothing to suggest a new direction. I listened to the whole thing looking for it, I even asked like minded people if they had seen it, there's nothing, nada, zilch, if it were a compass the NSEW would be missing, you could be mistaken for thinking Matt had not even featured on it, it is blandness in the extreme, a rehash of mediocre themes based on past achievements.
Don't get me wrong, a change of direction I could handle, in fact it's what keeps me interested, it's my Nirvana and what makes me listen to the obscure rather than the popular, the Rammstein to others Metallica. So, as a fan, you're absolutely correct I wouldn't fall asleep during a live version of this album, I wouldn't have bought a ticket in the first place.

I totally understand that talented people want to change direction and re-invent but that doesnt mean it is always going to be good! I think this is what has happened, I also suspect that there were not many people around the band to say 'actually that is crap', if you are going to reinvent (no matter what profession you are in) you need trusted people to tell you when you are disappearing up your own arse!

Parts to the album are actually ok, after living with it a bit. But, its not at all original or a development, which is the real crime as Muse always have been original. Look at the tracks:

'Uprising' is a Marilyn Manson song, and try singing 'shoot the Runner' over it... it fits!
The second and third songs are good!!
'United states' is just second, actually third, rate Queen.
'Guiding Light' has ripped the drum track straight from Ultrovox's Vienna.
'MK Ultra' is the theme tune from Treasure hunt, release it with a video of Anneka Rice and Wincie Willis and be done with it.
'I belong to you' is st;
the last three track (the symphony) is ok...

Its such a pity as Muse have been great at putting out original stuff that is good! They will still be awesome live, but this is an album to forget!
