Another vote for Velvet Revolver. Nothing revolutionary in their music, just good, old school rock.

Also, if you can find any, try The Tea Party. They broke up in 2004 or something like that and it is hard to find their stuff but they are quite unusual and worth a few tries. Sort of Jim Morrison Sings Joins Led Zeppelin in parts.

Can't hear this at work but hopefully the quality is OK. This was from around 1996 I think so might be outside your window.

The only other vaguely famous rock band I've had any real interest in over the last ten years is Muse.

Savatage - great metal band, did a cracking version of hall of the mountain king!

Can't believe no-one has mentioned the mighty Mastadon yet, Blood Mountain and their latest Crack The Skye are good starting points.
Neurosis are worth a punt too, the best introduction to them being either Given To Rising or A Sun That Never Sets.
Also Opeth might be worth a shout, if you don't mind growling rather than screaming (there is quite a lot of clean singing on their stuff too), with them I'd point you in the direction of Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park to begin with.

A Perfect Circle, Amplifier (modern prog - actually very good) and the Gutter Twins (Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees and the bloke from The Afghan Whigs). Extremely good, moody stuff.

Enjoy.

Paradise Lost?
They still going? They seem to have been around for eons.
..New album coming out very soon, their last one was their best for the last 12 years or so in my opinion.

A modernish band you might like is Karnivool. Not a million miles away from Tool at times:

If you're happy with instrumental stuff I'll recommend Cloudkicker. Some great work and it's all free to download. Can be quite technical but never too heavy:

Also missing from my last post was Acid Bath, either of their albums is essential listening for any self-respecting metal fan.

Ooh I'm liking Karnivool. "New Day" is really slick. EDIT: That whole tracklist sounded pretty good. Sits well alongside A Perfect Circle IMO.

...Glad you liked it Alfanatic. I find their stuff a bit hit/miss to be honest. Not that they've done 'bad' songs per-se but I generally struggle with any commercial rock/Metal*. I have 'Themata' by Karnivool and I've grown to really like most of it..

  • I'm listening to the new Megadeth album. Never been a massive fan but obviously preferred their earlier works. This isnt all that bad though.. On first listen I'd probably pick it over Death Magnetic anyway!

Looking at the things in your list (and the fact it’s in my music collection hehe ) you might want to consider…

Mudhoney
Stone Temple Pilots
Velvet Revolver
Machines of Loving Grace (eponymous album quite easy going)
Audioslave
Porcupine Tree
Rage Against the Machine (might be a bit shouty for you)
Some excellent calls in the above two lists. Trying to think of some 'new' bands, so my 2p:-

"New"
- InnerPartySystem (Pendulum meets NIN)
- The Music (not "new" but not hit the mainstream)
- Scars on Broadway
- Gallows (if you like old-school punk)
- Celldweller (rather cool industrial...no idea if they're new or not but I've only just discovered them)

Other "old"
- Killing Joke
- Project Pitchfork (who're touring soon)
- Pitchshifter (punk-industrial - DO NOT drive to this stuff! biggrin )
- Mindset (hardcore)
- Front 242 (New Order contemporaries from Belgium but harder-edged - go for Re:Boot: Live - more modern harder remixes of their old stuff)

I can imagine. Mustaine always really went his own way so I wouldn't be surprised if its still good. Death Magnetic on the other hand.... first listen I thought it's nice, a return to their old stuff. Second listen, hmm, actually, it sounds like their old stuff rearranged a bit so they don't get sued by Lars (I bet he would too!). Third listen made up my mind and that album will probably gather dust now.

My conclusion also, I was left by a feeling of "what's the point?"......having said that the new Muse album had the same effect on me
