i found an old box of records while clearing out the garage earlier, it had a good 50 or more vinyl albums from what looks like mostly the 50s,60s and 70s, which must have belonged to one of my parents, ive not got any interest in keeping them but am guessing some are collectable and better to sell on than throw away, is there any shops in the south east, preferably Surrey or London that deal with old records?.

There are 2nd hand record shops in Guildford, Aldershot, Farnham, and several in London, Notting Hill, Camden, Soho that might take them, and give you £5.

Whatever you think they are worth, it will get less than half that.

Or you could give them to Oxfam / British Heart Foundation shop?

Oxfam certainly take vinyl, they even have shops dedicated to books and music. There is one in Reading like that.

I sometimes wonder about trying to sell off some of my old vinyl. Passed a huge number (several thousand) to my sister and a good old friend. No turntable now, so no way of playing those that I have left.

The only one thats got any possible value is my original 4xLP set of Pulse. With the book. Practically a work of art.

And one that I won't get rid of regardless - Andrew Gold, Whats Wrong with this picture. Just love the cover!

Vinyl has never been out of vogue for the true music fan.

If it wasn't for those pesky CDs and downloads we would still have a record shop in every town, or even several!

That's a shame. They were pretty good, it was always fun to go and rummage through their stock. They almost went out of business a couple of years ago, but then they decided to trade over just one floor instead. Shame even that wasn't sustainable.

Vinyl is great. cloud9

There's always Wanted music in Beckenham, near the roundabout in Croydon Road.

you could say the same about flared trousers... fact of the matter is, it did fall out of favour for a while (much to my and probably others dissmay). Now from what i can tell, people seem to be intrested in vinyl again.

im 25 and just discovering the beauty of music played from a proper record. and im pleased to report its far more involving than a CD or any other medium IMO.

Flared trousers have always been in vogue with.. flared trouser fans?

I'm with Koenig on this one, it's incredibly unlikely vinyl will become popular again - but it has been known as the 'black gold' to collectors and some music fans etc for the last 15 years or so.

Well you could put up a list of the albums with a note about condition, I am sure others will be interested in buying, as I am if they are "my bag".

exactly my point, its subjective. some things never fall out of fashion with those who love them.

You are right they dont, but I was disagreeing with your statement that it was 'coming back into vogue'. I dont follow popular consensus much but I've not noticed an increase in the popularity of vinyl recently other than the few diehard editions which mainly appeal to the traditional vinyl fans anyway and are often highly limited.

Apologies to the OP for slightly getting off topic. As has been mentioned before, get a list of the releases up on here, as we may want some of what you've got or be able to point you to good websites for getting rid of that particular music.

I agree there is an increase in interest in the vinyl, but unfortunately it is still a minority appeal, because it takes dedication to go out and find shops selling it.

Just think of the enormous number of specialist dance music record shops thatsprung up and now gone, with the decline in scene.

I blame the student timewasters, every University town/city used to have a selection of record shops to supply the needs of the population, now mostly gone.

Anyway, I took some spare duplicate vinyls into MVE Notting Hill last week, 10 of them raised £2.00 each, another 10 raised £0.05 each, exchange value, cash would have been half that.

I haven't had a turntable for quite a while, and I do definitely miss it ....

You're right though - it is far more involving.

The demise of the old back street type record stores is a little sad. i used to spend way too much time (and money) browsing stores for something rare or obscure. Got some gems over the years.
