Transports me back to the summer of 1990, the summer 'twixt GCSEs and 6th Form, which I remember as an 8-week permaparty - although memory may have editted out the boring bits... We played this a lot.

Toads very happy today because he's just found two songs that he's wanted to post on here for ages.
Waaayyy back in 1990 there was an album released by a band called Eg & Alice called 24 Years Of Hunger, which I thought was absolutely brilliant. They were a duo where Eg was Anthony White and Alice was the former BMX champion (!) and model Alice Temple. The album was full of smooth pop/electronic songs polished to perfection by Eg in his own recording studio.... which was actually his kitchen. It was classy, sad and thought provoking. And no one bought it...
I mean no one. At all. Ever.
So they split and after a couple of failed solo albums, eventually Eg found his way into production/song writing and found he was rather good at it. So after a few years of writing songs for/working with:
Tom Odell
Florence & The Machine
James Blunt
Will Young
Duffy
Adele
James Morrison
Natalie Imbruglia
Joss Stone
Pink
Kylie
Take That
+ 2 x Ivor Novello awards
So I'm guessing having made a st load of money (and 24 Years Of Hunger now being praised by critics as one of the great undiscovered albums of the 90s), five years ago he decided to have another bash at this solo album idea. So Adventure Man was released which I thought was absolutely brilliant.
It was classy, sad and thought provoking. And no one bought it...
I mean no one. At all. Ever.
I'm guessing that although it was a total commercial flop, Eg probably wasn't that bothered as the royalty cheques for Chasing Payments and Leave Right Now keep hitting the floor with tedious thump every week. And I also think that he had kept two of his best songs back just for himself and finally here they are. They just go to show (to me at any rate) breadth of his talent.
Pull Me Through.

Is clearly a previously unfinished Eg & Alice song that he got Alice back into complete. But it is so cold you could store venison in it. It is completely desolate, about someone who has failed totally, who is so far into depression its doubtful anyone or anything can pull him through. Its a song about someone who feels he has no redeeming features, he is gone. Finished.
"There is no excuse for all the things I've done,"...
If You Run.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5uaYZz43Uc&li...
... And then he skips to this. One of the most joyous, hopeful, romantic and down right soppy love songs ever written. The perfect expression of the idea its never too late, that you might be able to make up for past mistakes and hesitations & that one day you might get that happy ending we all have seen in the movies. In fact when I played this to a friend once, they said "Its a whole Richard Curtis film in one song!" Even at my cynical old age, that line at the end of the final verse makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck.
"Because when you wake in the morning, she could be holding you,"
Sorry. I'm on day off, bored and I know that's a bit of a lecture but I really love those two songs and I been waiting to find them on Youtube for ages.
I'll ps off now....

Very chill-out, sort of garden-party stuff.
