tuscaneer said: by rights i should hate the jangliness of that but i really like it.vocalist reminds me of elliot coleman of tesseract.well, tesseract up until a few weeks ago anyway.they have worse luck with singers than spinal tap do with drummers Their style really is very unique. Almost impossible to pigeon-hole them. And the singer is simply incredible - his range (not only vocal but style) is like nothing I've heard before. Here's a few off their first album proper - they were spotted by Serj Tankian and signed to his label Serjical Strike for their first one. This almost has an air of English Folkiness about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrLF8N7nhhghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLeDvvQRANwIt's not as heavy as the later album Arrows & Anchors from which Amarillo Sleeps on Pillow originates. This is the opener off that one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyCqbCvYDm8

I've also got into my Aussie alt-rock a bit as well off the back of Karnivool. Dead Letter Circus are the standout group for me, with some real intensity in tracks such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd81KOOxBWQ

What I like is that proper singing is coming back to metal, even if it's the lighter end of metal. That's why I was also hooked by the Texas Hippie Coalition. Big Rick can really crack the notes out, in a good old-fashioned rock/metal style. Add to that I'm a bass man at heart, and so many of these emerging acts are heavy on the bass riffs.

I was nodding along to "Pissed off and Mad About It" a while back. Good stuff. Singer makes Russ Anderson look slim! Hopefully we're finally starting to exit the whole "metalcore by numbers" vocal era and get back to bands where character is more important than note perfect technique and the singers aren't afraid to be themselves. Oh, and Tuscaneer, I think it was Hydrodjent/Skyharbor I introduced you to?

Here's another that Tuscaneer won't like. Like a pissed off Cult of Luna and something new to me today; which is nice. Adrift - Fury RoofSludge+Hardcore I guess, good album. Oh, and I'm sure Tesseract were mentioned on Radio 2 this afternoon..

tuscaneer said: Liking that as well buddy. I've tried to get into Tesseract before but as I think I've already said, I struggle with that proggy/djent stuff a bit. I love the the technical side of it, and enjoy it a bit but I just can't listen too long. I don't think I've heard the Elliot Coleman stuff though before. Cracking voice. Having hammered Fair To Midland's "Fables from a Mayfly - What I Tell You Three Times Is True" over the past few days, my copies of their later album Arrows & Anchors has arrived. As has Dead Letter Circus's debut album "This is the Warning". I'm still working through my first listen to the latter, but so far it's an astounding work. The energy it has is incredible. Here's one I think you might like - it builds. Monumentally. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa006bKfo9M

The MIGHTY CrawAndddd... Seeing as we now seem to be touching on the slightly light/melodic side of things, bordering on heavy rock (ie Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus etc)... Dredg

Just listened to the new A Forest of Stars album, another good one although the vocals can get a bit annoying. Nice instrumentation, reminiscent of Agalloch, MDB, Drudkh, Katatonia at times. Keep on managing to miss them live unfortunately. This might be the most easy listening track for this thread (more or less an instrumental), one of my favourites from the album. A Forest of Stars - Left Behind As Static
