Static X frontman Wayne Statiic found dead

Hardly the most groundbreaking or technicalband ever, but I enjoyed a lot of their stuff, especially the first album

I was about 14 I think when The Only was released and they definitely got me into heavier music.

Shame, but he was a rock star and he married a porn star so he probably had quite a laugh!

I've just remembered, the new Cavalera Conspiracy album is out. Downloading it from Music Unlimited just now, just about to see if it's any good.
If it's anything like the first one, the answer will be no.

Was just listening to Black & White on youtube and noticed a few RIP comments but thought it was a joke.

The Wayne Static news was a real shock, days after announcing a European tour where I had planned to go and see as many shows as I could frown

I've been a fan since Wisconsin Death Trip and seen them live a few times, it's true they weren't the most technical of bands from a guitar point of view (and Wayne would be the first to admit it, I think he even went as far to say he wrote most songs on a drum machine first) they could play when they wanted to. For me it was more about the combination of all the musical elements coming together, the samples, the dual guitar parts where they would split chords between them.

Wayne was a great entertainer above all but a petrol-head too, it's a shame we've lost someone like him while One Direction continue to bloom.

Back on track - I've been listening to a bit of Destrage recently and quite like it.

I think quite a few of the posters here could like Telepathy. You can download their album for free here:

https://telepathyband.bandcamp.com/

Instrumental, which suits me as avoids any whiny/angsty vocals. Heavy but with a fairly polished sound with a good bit of variety.

I liked it, some decent tracks and some decent guitar playing too. I like Marc Rizzo.
Fair enough. I thought it was lazy, cliched drivel.

Latest purchases from me are both relatively mainstream:

At the Gates - At War With Reality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzjshF0TFm8
Blinding album, a welcome return kinda midway between Slaughter of the Soul and Terminal Spirit Disease

Sick of it All - Last Act of Defiance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WS96EY_fEM
To be honest I have not bought anything they've done since Scratch The Surface, bust since seeing the vid for Road Less Travelled decided to get this and it's an enjoyable slice of NYHC. Still love these guys, they definitely helped shape my musical tastes back in the day.

Tool is just tool. I suspect calling them nu-metal might cause Maynard to burn your house down.
biggrin
hehe

Maynard is a little...eccentric. That said, Tool are about as influential in the alt / alt-metal / etc scenes as anyone since FnM and NIN. And pretty much as good live...although I was thoroughly gutted 6/7 years ago when they said they weren't performing their old stuff (Opiate / Undertow / Aenima) any longer.

Today in the car, I was listening to old st...Stabbing Westward
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6msMrb0m6I
(flashback time...first heard the intro to this song on MTV's Headbangers ball ~20 years ago...Vanessa Warwick was broadcasting from some event in the 'States and 20-30sec of the song intro was played as the segue into/out of adverts. Got me into a whole range of Industrial and alt-metal and away from the mainstream NWOBHM / Metallica / 'chart' metal I'd been listening to up until then...)

PS - god bless YouTube - one of the links was this song which I haven't played for ages, with the X-Files being guilty for getting me into Filter around the same sort of time:-

Well whilst I'm still on something of a doom trip, I have managed to listen to some other stuff too! My guitarist recommended Zozobra. Don't know how I missed them! Their albums all have a bit of a different flavour:

Born in a Blaze (Savage Masters - 2012)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpVs9KxvKAA

Lasereyes (Bird of Prey 2008)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sw6aliEMgc

The Blessing (Harmonic Tremors 2007)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8Y-3Zuvdjg

Also ended up revisiting Godflesh. A band I never quite clicked with, but this is an amazing tune:

Anyone heard Bloodbath's new album Grand Morbid Funeral?

Nick Holmes of Paradise Lost is on vocals this time round. I quite like it, it's very different to the last three albums but no worse for it IMO.

Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Love me some bloodbath! Heard one tune from it. Definitely different but I'm looking forward to hearing the whole album.

Never 'got' Bloodbath, but I like the heavier side of Paradise Lost and Vallenfyre. Is it worth giving the new Bloodbath album a go? How is it different?

I still find it difficult to get into any new Death Metal, but this has been one of my favourite DM songs/releases of 2014:

Necros Christos - Nine Graves (This skips to the title track, which is what first drew my attention to the release)

Bolzer still doing it for me though, I think my top 2014 DM release:

Bolzer - Soma EP

I love how in a 30 year old genre with 1000s of bands, a new band can come out and still create a trademark sound or style.

Nothing like as plugged into the release cycle as I once was, but Bolzer was very impressive. Find of the year for me remains "Gastronomicon" by Slugdge. Looks like it ought to be a joke record, but it's an absolute monster of a thing. Other than that, I'd say Teitanblood's "Death" has been the thing that most blew me away. Sure others will rave about Origin, Decapitated and that sort of stuff, but for me, the more outright technical death metal has got, the less interesting it has become, as the whole thing just sounds like an equation.

Something that completely passed me by this year but Fu Manchu's new album for 2014 Gigantoid!

Still nice riff based stoner rock/metal with a surf feel to it!

I saw you mention Slugde recently but I've not heard them yet - I will take a look. Listened to 'Seven Chalices' from Teitanblood when it was a fresh release and didn't get into it, but my moods for things are ever changing.

I don't mind some Decapitated, it's not all that technical compared to many; and I do like mid-period Death, Obscura's Cosmogenesis album, Ulcerate's 'Everything is Fire' and bits of Beyond Creation.

Slugdge are well worth checking out - two lads from Preston putting out entirely self released stuff on Bandcamp, but really is impressive. Tonne of Bolt Thrower, Necroticsm era Carcass and various other old school influences, but then it'll suddenly drop in a prog or even deathcore tone, or even break out into a crusty section. Vocals are also great, as there's no single reliance on one style, but with everything seeming to flow.

Technical death metal is a weird beast for me. I enjoy stuff like Ulcerate, Portal and Vassafor, but that has a chaotic menace and sense of unease about it, which are the rough edges I find I can hook on to. Stuff like Origin and Beyond Creation just feels too neat and tidy and I can't find any sort of entry point. Far too polished and lifeless to me, but then I have old school ears. That said, I'm finding myself enjoying djent and prog stuff a lot more, so who knows what I'll be singing the praises of this time next week!

Out of interest, ever heard Illogicist? Sense they'd be up your street.
