Enjoying Kult's "Unleashed from Dismal Light" at the moment. As with their "Winds of War" release, it does nothing new, but similar to my recent Denial of God posting, it's unapologetic second wave style Black Metal, which still has a place.

More enjoyable stuff, found following a mention of Angry Metal Guy's review of Slugdge's the previously posted Gastronomicon.

Love the old school organic sound mixed up with more current writing styles. Nice sense of space about it, which far too much modern death metal is missing. Everything just seems to be a barrage of blasting and all double bass drumming all the time.

Yeah that's excellent and the drummer is good as mentioned. What a peculiar setup though! It looks like he's got 3 snares and 1 tom.

Maybe because he's a left hander...
Eh? Three toms and one snare more like. It's very trendy to have them set up like that. You can thank Alex Rudinger for that.

Few things to kick off 2015 :-

Bast
Gilgamesh

Surprised myself that I sort of enjoyed this, given tech death isn't my usual fare :-

Alterbeast

Can't listen to too much of it in one sitting, as I do tend to get "sweep fatigue", but enjoying it in smaller doses.

Very much enjoying getting back into Carcass. The Surgical Steel album is a blinder. Blast beats and grooves. Awesome.

Also bopping to a bit of Anal C.u.n.t as well. The later stuff is almost listenable.

Oh, and Goatwe too, particularly 'Baring Teeth for Revolt'. Very metal. Ideal wedding band, IMO.

Goatwe are all kinds of awesome but having been an Acid Bath fan forever, Sammy has always been a bit of a guitar hero for me.

AC were always my "guilty pleasure" band. It's utter garbage, but somehow managed to raise a smile every once in a while. Their "Unplugged" series is hilarious. Quite how they ever managed to get as long a career out of it is anyone's guess.

Anyone got the new Sylosis album? Loving it so far, each one seems to get heavier and heavier. Can't wait to see it live!

just took delivery of the new periphery double album. so much going on i just couldn't take it in on first listen.

another band (like skyharbor) moving away from the djent only side of things and spreading their wings a bit. there's still a lot of rhythmically complex stuff going on but a lot less of the huge crunchy noise gated stabby guitar playing.

More slug based oddness from Slugdge

Haven't enjoyed a new find as much in years. The lyrics alone have me hooked!

Two new albums on repeat in the car this week.

First, The Sanity Days "Evil Beyond Belief". Best way to describe it would be like an evil Saxon. Classic metal, high vocals, great guitaring and dark lyrics. The Sanity Days is made up of ex members of Onslaught (mostly from the "In Search Of Sanity" era, hence the band name).

Second is the new album from Reign Of Fury - "Death Be Thy Shepherd". On the more melodic side of thrash, on first listen hasn't grabbed me quite as much as the first album "World Detonation", but does have some very good tracks.

Stuff I have been rocking recently: Stoned Jesus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW1jxJ6ISks, High on Fire - Snakes for the Devine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0VPVawpN8E (how did this one pass me by?)

Also finally got round to recording some of my own material and I'll post it up here for the heavy music thread's ridicule/reviews: https://soundcloud.com/james-keating-8/impending-e... this is only a rough demo but just after I recorded this, I actually managed (after 2 years of searching!) find a decent, reliable drummer so there's plenty more to come, including a better version of this, hopefully.

Been in a Black Metal mood of late, but really struggling to find anything that satisfies. Been listening to Watain, but weirdly, I find it suffers from being too proficient, which sounds like a rather odd complaint. Does all the right things at all the right times, but that gives me the feeling of it being far too calculated, as though spawned from some sort of Black Metal algorithm. Only things I've found that I've really enjoyed of late have been Death Karma and bd Sapling, but sure there must be more out there?!

Somehow it feels like a guilty pleasure to me but that hasn't stopped me listening to it! Drummer definitely slides into the overplaying category at points though.

My last few recent discoveries are Paths, Ennoven, Antartandes, Nocternity, Hermodr and Gloam amongst others. A bit too busy to find links for each, also Funereal Presence, Nordvrede perhaps. Really enjoyed Vulturine too, but they a bit more on the Black/Thrash side.
