To be honest, what I love about them, especially the Acid Reign and Lawnmower Deth ones, is they have a sense of fun that long since seems to have vanished from metal. Everything these days seems to be analysed and quantified to the nth degree and it just feels horribly sterile, as though people are just pushing a laptop button marked "modern metal sound" and churning out yet another album that sounds like Trivium. That KSE cover is a great example. I'm sure it's better played and better produced than the original, but remove the video and it could be anyone. Everything has been nipped and tucked to remove the imperfections and it's just drained the character out of it completely.
I don't disagree with any of that. Metal in particular can disappear very far up it's own backside. However, I think the aforementioned songs are...well....sh!t. Moving away from cover version pantomime, found this tonight and have been enjoying a lot.
Tempel - Descending into the Labyrinth
Not so much listening to it as swimming in it. Good stuff.

Whilst we're on covers, Deftones can't go unmentioned given they released an album's worth!

Another cover I've been enjoying recently - Sikth meets Nick Cave.

Also, not that heavy, but Coheed and Cambria announced a new album today and released the first song off it.
Really looking forward to this one, awesome live too so it should spawn a tour. I want to catch a "Neverender" without having to go to Hevyfest too.On a completely unrelated road we have new Japanese kawaii metal from Ladybaby:

Interesting documentary about the Southern USA metal scene

Not for those into technical precision or crystal clear production values, that's for sure, but interesting viewing if you like it sludgey and dirty.

Funnily enough, I watched this the other night. Great film, loads of bands in it that I'm really into. Was surprised they didn't interview Kirk Windstein though.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDK6ECp-6Zc

I listen to some of the bands more than others, but certainly a good watch. Probably the most honest of the many metal documentaries in recent years? A lot of the Black and extreme metal ones have tended to play up the image, whereas that was very much about the people and the place as much as the music.thetapeworm said:

In others news, Cradle of Filth's new album "Hammer of the Witches" is their best since 2000's "Midian". So many amazing songs, chock full of brilliant riffs and Dani's brilliantly written lyrics. The new keyboardist / backing singer is fantastic, she does a great harp piece on the album, I suppose I should mention that she's "not hard to look at" as Guy Martin would say.
So enthused am I, that I've bought a ticket to see them in October, they're worth the drive from Newcastle to Manchester and back.
