....so.....by chance i was in the city centre on friday....same release day as the new iron maiden album "book of souls"....

i thought the last album was a so-so but i've got to say it's really well put together. refreshing nods to the last 35 years here and there without being a cheap pastiche of sewn together bits and bobs of the previous albums.
it's good to see that after so long and so many peaks and troughs they can still come up with new material that sounds good.

i saw that 36 crazyfists had an album out last year and got that....pretty much the same as the last few to be honest.

and hed(pe) are back. after everything since the first album failing to catch light it was more of a curiosity purchase really but a change in the line up seem to have mixed things up a bit. on the whole quite good

I was never that impressed with Roddy as he never looked to be having much fun, but on that track he's obviously having a ball.

Talking of Hoglan, he's posted up a DTA drum cam which finally shows how good he really is - simply perfection., I've been a huge fan of his since Individual Thought Patterns -

Hoglan is a top beastdrummer, he did some mint work with Devin Townsend's Strapping Young Lad.

Speaking of another big bloke who is alright at the kit, Nick Barker. Kicked out of Dimmu Borgir, likely for not being Norwegian and replaced with Hellhammer, who is fking st. How'd that work out for them?

No arguments, I was a huge SYL fan and listened to Symbolic today - that stuff (and Gene's drumming) is still incredible 20 years on in this current era of pro-tooled, quantized antiseptic metal.

Don't get the deal over Hellhammer either - awful style though pretty effective, but not a patch on NB (anybody know what he's up to these days??....).

Apparently there's a new Slayer album out - I predict skank beats, more skank beats, KK wailing away and TA's screams as per their last 10 albums (though I stand to be corrected).

Hellhammer is a drummer who has simply floated along because he was part of Mayhem when they were a band that meant something - and he wasn't even a part of what really made them so special, which imo was their infamy and not their music, as Emperor were always much more musically interesting imo. Hellhammer has since bounced from project to project despite being a completely average drummer, just listen to what happened to Dimmu Borgir's drums after he took over.

I'm not sure what Nick is up to these days, he's been in loads of bands and has worked as a session and live drummer for many others. He still seems to be making a living from extreme metal, which is good to see. It would be good to see him back with Cradle of Filth for old time's sake, but it will likely never happen as CoF's drummer is A)very good and B) the primary songwriter for the band these days. Still, Nick's stuff, in particular his drumming on "Dusk and her Emrbace", "V Empire" and "Cruelty and the Beast" is some of my favourite metal drumming ever put to tape.

I was a tad concerned that when you used the word melodic you might mean some kind of Jovi/Poison nonsense. Thankfully you didn't! That's a bit good that, I shall keep an eye out for your band!

Melodeath from Azerbaijan of all places. I'm usually indifferent to this stuff, as there just seems to be so much of it about, but this is excellent. Melody doesn't wash out the aggression, plus there's a bit of edge to the vocals.

Silence Lies Fear

Also enjoying what I've heard of the new Amorphis. Bit worried I'm going soft in my old age!

Could you suggest a couple of CoF tracks that display Barkers ability please? I am a Hellhammer fan, although he's down the list of my favourites or who I think is 'best'. I hate the triggered drums of recent Mayhem but really enjoy his performance on DMDS, and a few of the other projects though.

Some good Nick Barker tracks with Cradle of Filth - Queen of Winter Throned, Dusk and Her Embrace, Thirteen Autumns and Widow, Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids and Desire in Violent Overture are good ones, but the drum sound on the last 3 tracks there leaves something to be desired - the production of the "Cruelty and the Beast" album was fked up in the mixing stage, making the drums sound thin and burying the backing vocals. It's still my favourite metal album though, you can't kill those songs even with a poor mix.

Nicholas was on Dimmu Borgir's "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropy" and "Death Cult Armageddon" albums and the drumming is banging on those too, probably the most drum worthy track I can immediately draw to mind from them is "Kings of Carnival Creation" for having the full arsenal of super quick, ultra-tight foot triplets, fast and sustained blast beats, dat groove etc.

Sadly I was never able to see Nick live with COF or Dimmu Borgir, he was supposed to be tight as live and was spot on from what video is out there.

And now for some classic death metal:

I love how Dave Vincent is wearing and ECW shirt in this video biggrin

Thanks.

I have and know the Dimmu Borgir albums but they're not exactly played a lot; it's the CoF material that I've not heard as I'm generally not a fan, Will give them a go later on though as like many I love a nice bit of drumming.

As it happens, I will be seeing Hellhammer with Arcturus next month at a small festival, should be interesting but expecting a horrible drum sound.

Baffles me these guys are unsigned, unless that's the way they like it. This is genius!

Whole thing is a deliciously s(l)ick and twisted joy with more than a touch of the Walker/Steer feel to it. Feels like it has a rounder sound than Gastronomicon as well? Bit more space in it, which adds to the atmosphere.

If you're into Tesseract, you'll might like 'SkyHarbor'. Originally a one-man-band but Tess' singer put vocals over his youtube tracks and a band was formed:

Then a random band I found looking for some 'djenty' stuff. (There are some cracking Australian bands out there)

yeah, skyharbor's first album was superb. i wasn't as impressed with the second album at first....but a few listens in and it gets you. it's like polaris..you don't get all of it first off it needs a good few listens to really sink in.

karnivool were great on the old stuff but last years "assymetry" was challenging and overall was a let down.

if you like the djenty stuff (it seems it's being done to death now but there's still some cool new stuff) the original wave of bands are still worth a listen....

seeing as we're on australia....
