That's oddly enjoyable, in a weird "Sigue Sigue Sputnik meets Gorillaz whilst listening to Turisas" sort of way.
I suppose it goes without saying that I found that then bought the album off eMusic.

I like it!! smile It's definitely got potential.....

But having said that I've now got big-style into EBM and electro-industrial music recently (now playing for an EBM artist called Null White).

I was very close to going, although mainly for the Reign In Blood performance.. but I was festival last weekend in Germany (Deathkult Open Air) and couldn't justify the cost for another break from work.

..So this time last week I was eagerly anticipating seeing Inquisition later on in the day. They reinforced why they're my favourite band of the last few years:

Inquisition at Deathkult

I love how they create such an encompasing sound and atmosphere with just two members.

Proficiency but lacking in soul - Chris Broderick or Fredrik Thordendal over these guys any day....

Probably applies to a great deal of metal at the moment to be honest. Certainly the case in the death metal and melodeath/thrash worlds.

Yep, just because you can doesn't mean you should (i.e. all well and good being able to play these complex riffs but if it's not got soul then what's the point?...)

It's also why Meshuggah (not djent) will always be the best - their riffs always have a soul to them imo

That was exactly my reaction. At first I was genuinely amazed by the technical ability on display - beyond dispute.

But then I got to thinking, "there's a melody and a harmony and a polywossname and a widdly bit and this and that, but where's the song?"

And the song never arrived.

oh, i don't disagree chaps...i just felt it needed to be seen to be believed!! the whole djent argument is a storm in a teacup as hornet alluded to.plenty of modern metal is soul free.i think a lot of it has to do with digital recording techniques and the methods used to "tidy up" all what is going on.you have a mega complex riff that you want to record perfectly with every drum and choke in perfect syncopation..........cheat!! you can digitally scrub out missed beats, missed strums etc and synthetically replicate giving an overall less organic feel to everything.periphery's debut album or animals as leaders first album are perfect examples of this digital sheen to everything.
but i have a real soft spot for electronic music and as such love depeche mode and how all that developed in to stuff like nine inch nails.....i actually like that detatched, robotic feel

On a completely different note (ba-dum tish!) I listened to the whole of the first Jesu album again over the weekend.

What an amazing record that is.

Me too, hence why I'm now providing live drums for an industrial electronica artist here in the North East - nothing like a bit of Oontz these days along with the chug of metal...
