Great to see Conan making an appearance, well worth seeing live for full effect.

I don't really want to discuss what is heavy metal and I am not sure what I've just heard in those two links but that is awful.

Some atmospheric metal is very, very good. Not keen on the above though!

..Well, going against the trend I didn't mind either. I knew roughly what to expect with Ufomammut anyway, and thought Toner Low was alright too. Neither really my 'thing' though. Are either 'Heavy Metal'? Subjective, but definitely heavy music and fitting of the thread. It's a broad church, as they say.

Conan are a bit of a 'flavour of the year' band aren't they.. nothing against them; just seem to have got a fair amount of coverage/hype.

Can't think of anything particularly new and special I've heard this week, enjoyed the new Darkspace album but had a slight surprise with this slightly Fear Factory 'Demanufacture' era-esque track:

Darkspace - 4.19

As for Conan, I can see why people might not like them, but I just love the sheer size of it. Not technical in the million riffs per song sense, but there's some really subtle stuff going on when you sit back and listen - the tiniest changes in a repeated riff for example, or slowly building changes in a tone. If you're not into doom and repetition you're clearly not going to like it, but then I'm not really into keyboard drenched atmospheric widdling or the million miles an hour tech-death stuff a lot of people seems to rave about, so it's horses for courses really.

Very nice blog post by Matt Harvey of Exhumed on that very subject.

I really like Meshuggah apart from the vocals. A bit like Lamb of God. Incredibly talented musicians though.
Fair enough, I can see how they could grate. I actually think the vocals are a bit high in the mix in the most recent album. They often have excellent lyrics though and the way he splits words up to match the weird time signatures is awesome though. Have you seen this:

Outstanding lyrics!

Nice find this evening. Can remember having some demos and EPs from these guys waaaay back when I was doing the whole tape trading thing, so enjoyed finding them again. One of those bands who have managed to be around since back then yet still only issue a handful of releases.

Denial of God - Black Dethe

Doesn't break any new ground whatsoever, but still plenty to enjoy IMO.

Edited to add - cracker of a closing track :-

Denial of God - Pendulum Swings

Feels like a blackened version of Deceased perhaps?

Saw Denial of God live a couple of years ago, they were far better than I expected to be honest. I seemed to remember them having a bit of a cheesey image in the early days but it to transmitted well to the stage; Mortuary Drape were simiar when I saw them last year too. (Some) Older bands do just seem to know/not forget how to perform live.

Let's be honest, who didn't have a cheesy image back then?!

Oddly enough, Mortuary Drape was one of the bands I listened to after finding DOG again, along with Varathron, Thou Art Lord, Mystifier and Necromantia. Interesting to note they all come from scenes that had a darker, more occult nature than the upfront shock of the Scandinavian stuff of the same era. I think it's helped them age far better. Mystifier's "Göetia" still gives me chills 21 years later!

Anyone heard the latest Xerath record? I really like it, probably one of my favourite newer bands. Saw them live supporting Sylosis a couple of years ago and was blown away by how tight they were. Any other fans?

I can't find what I wanted to post on Youtube yet, the opening track on the new Horned Almighty album, so I will post what I have just been listening to anyway:

Rahu - On Ketu's Trail

Of course very true, it was the 'Horror' tag they used that put me off more than others. Strangely enough I saw Mystifier 6 months ago too, didn't see the whole set but another good performance.

I recently discovered www.heavyhandedradio.com , streaming a variety of heavyness 24/7 without breaks, news, adverts.

Any other stations like that ?

I still miss K666 Radio from the now defunct stonerrock.com site with the fine selection of Heavy / Stoner / Drone / Sludge ,

with added sprinkles of Krautrock, classic Rock and other "where it all originated" stuff.

they were awesome! Expected the singer to still have dreads hehe they were really good! Closed their set with some reggae, too. Which was amusing and really well done!

American Head Charge were awesome, fairly lively set and were chatting to everyone, really sound guys.

Soil were really good too, not listened to a huge amount of them but they were awesome!

Dude from AHC liked my mushroomhead shirt, too hehe

Thanks Neil, good to hear it´s alive, too bad I can´t rip it into single files like the old winamp thingy.

(I bought some CDs from bands I liked, checked tour plans, went to concerts, so downloading is not too bad I think)

Offt. Definitely not my cup of tea at all!

Anyone heard the new Yob album? Don't bother if you think anything over 3 mins is long tune!
