Ennio Morricone and John Williams are pretty awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd0uEHwh1Ec is probably my most favourite tune.

Wagner used it extensively in his operas - "leitmotifs" or recurring themes for a character or situation.
now we're talking. the immolation followed by the rhine rising, 11+ hours of seemingly unrelated motif sections all blending. unsurpassed by any other music.except nimrod.
The trouble I have with John Williams, as he seems to recycle the same themes and sounds within the genre, e.g. Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Superman. Mind you, the same could be said about Ennio Morricone, but I will forgive him, purely because of Ecstacy of Gold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObKgCaWyAig
Thomas Newman has written some absolute beauties though, and Ron Goodwin : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XKGhG0W0LQ

Its difficult to decide on this because each film score tends to have 1 or 2 outstanding pieces that can be listened to without the film.
Most film scores tend to have a lot of "fill" that doesn't make sense musically without the film being played with it.
However this is PistonHeads and we love lists on Pistonheads so here goes:
Where Eagles Dare - Ron Goodwin
Aliens - James Horner
Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan - James Horner
Koyaanisqatsi - Philip Glass
Return of the Jedi - John Williams
Raiders of the Lost Ark - John Williams
Back to the Future - Alan Silvestri
Local Hero - Mark Knopfler
LOTR The Fellowship of the Ring - Howard Shaw
Inception - Hans Zimmer
Friday Night Lights - Explosions in the Sky
You Only Live Twice - John Barry
Moon - Clint Mansell
Requiem for a Dream - Clint Mansell
Tron Legacy - Daft Punk
20th Century Fox Logo - Alfred Newman
My all time favourite is not a score as such but the music from The Blues Brothers is just fantastic.

Sad to relate but John Barry died yesterday.
I have always been a fan of his film music.
Being a child of the 60s I always have an affection for Ron Goodwin's themes as well.
Apart from "Where Eagles Dare" (mentioned above), he also wrote
633 Squadron
Battle of Britain
Murder at the Gallop (and the general music for the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films)
Another them that is worth listening to is Nino Rota's theme for the 1979 film "Death on the Nile".

Yes... John Barry, RIP. Damn. Not even old, really.... I shall dig out my Ipcress File soundtrack CD and have a suitably maudlin morning.I have always been a fan of his film music.

Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek I / TNG, etc., Alien, etc.)
Old thread I know, but in case anyone is interested, the London Philharmonic Orchestra will be playing Star Trek stuff at the beginning of November in the Royal Albert Hall... http://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2015...Apparently this sort of concert are quite popular in France.
I know I like soundtracks but didn't realise how many I have. This is just the CD's, not included are tapes and stuff downloaded from Amazon Prime.
