No.
And yes!
I think the "Libraries gave us power" comes from the engraving over the entrance to Newport Library where it says "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER", I think.
No-one liked "The Great Western" but me??? No-one? Are you all sure now? Damn. And yes!

Libraries gave us power bit is indeed inspired by the slogan in a Newport Library.
The second part derives from "Arbeit macht frei" - a slogan that featured above the gates of Nazi concentration camps.
New album "Futurology" out in early July, can't wait. Based on the first three tunes I've heard, I'm going to enjoy this one.
They played the title song and "Europa Geht Durch Mich" on their recent tour and the first single from the album "Walk Me To The Bridge" is so bloody catchy as well. Think this will be a cracking album.

Only just got around to buying Rewind the film and love "sullen Welsh heart" (track 1)
I think James is great when he plays acoustically
Definitely. He played "From Despair To Where" acoustically at the Bournemouth gig; strange choice of song to perform that way but he nailed it.I think James is great when he plays acoustically

I heard a Manics song played on Kerrang radio yesterday between 10 and 1, was really good but didn't get the name.
Their listen again player isn't working, long shot....but did anyone hear it/know what song it was?!
Can you give us some clues? Fast or slow, acoustic or banging? Any words or phrases you might have caught?Their listen again player isn't working, long shot....but did anyone hear it/know what song it was?!
Im not sure, the lads listen to kerrang radio in the warehouse and I happened to be giving them a hand and heard it.
I usually have planet rock on in the office.
This has happened before, and I got my OH to hunt for a song by a band that covered "What a wonderful world". Several hours later...I realised it was a cover of "Easy" and it was by Faith No More !
Sure this was the manics though !

I'm a bit of a funny Manics fan - I like the stuff no-one else does. I love the album 'Lifeblood', which no-one seems to rate at all. I don't like Generation Terrorists, but I do like Gold Against The Soul. I don't like This is my Truth but I love Everything Must Go. I really don't like Know Your Enemy.
They've been patchy of late, but Journal For Plague Lovers was brilliant.

So has anyone gone out and purchased the new album "Futurology" this week?
I picked up my copy on Monday at HMV in Cardiff where the band were doing a signing. Absolutely love the new style sound although I bet it will alienate some of their more hard core fans. Not sure what my favourite from the album is but I guess "Black Square" is up there.
Heavily rumoured they will tour again in a few months, celebrating the 20th anniversary of "The Holy Bible".

I wouldn't say it is a real departure. They seem to alternate between the harder edged stuff (this new album, Holy Bible, Know Your Enemy, Journal For Plague Lovers) and the more traditional pop/rock. I don't think it is a classic of theirs (and not as good as Journal in terms of their only decent album in recent years).Definitely in my Top 5 bands.
I've bought Futurology, I like it, but not as much as some of their more recent stuff. I know I'm in a minority amongst MSP fans, but I really like Postcards From A Young Man and Send Away The Tigers over the perceived 'greats' of The Holy Bible and Gold Against The Soul.
I catch them on tour whenever I can, just saw them play a great Glastonbury set. Disappointingly Nina Persson (still looking hot!) was there on the same day and schedules would have allowed her to guest appear for You're Love Alone Is Not Enough .... they played it, alas no sign of the lovely Ms Persson. She was great solo too, as is her new record.
Amusingly for me, back in Feb '94 my then-girlfriend, a student hipster, bought Generation Terrorists on cassette as a Valentine's gift, handing it to me with the immortal words "I've got you this because you said you wanted it but I don't think you'll be into it", delivered in something of a superior tone. She's long gone from my life but the Manics are very much still a part of it. I've still got the tape, but recently treated yself to a CD upgrade on it. Oh, and yes, I bought JDB's 'The Great Western', listen to it regularly!

I like the Manics, one of music's survivors & bands that survive are usually the best kind, in that they have that elusive gang mentality that sees them through.
However...Nicky Wire has always got on my tits. First of all & most of all, there's the st bass playing. I admit he's got better over time, but in from the early days to their peak, his bass lines obediently follow the melody around, adding very little to the music. So, I guess to bolster your band credentials, you could piss about in dresses & makeup. I get that, but not wearing shades indoors. That really pisses me off that does, it's the worst bombastic rock star bks ever.
Richie Edwards, I suppose we all wonder about him. Truth is though, he couldn't play either, they turned him down at the PA for live stuff, although in fairness, that's beside the point. JDB, though, awesome guitarist, way above most of his peers, creatively. Design for life is full of odd partial chords, extended ninths & arpeggios whilst Chesney Hawkes was knocking out power chords awash with chorus.
For me, the earlier stuff is best & their pop side too, so La Tristessa, Kevin Carter, Motorcycle emptiness etc.

I've lost track of the Manics in recent years -does Nicky still write most of the lyrics (with Richey in the early years) or does James now write some?However...Nicky Wire has always got on my tits. I saw them on the One show? the other day - James and Sean looking their age - Nicky looking like a bloated bellend in the shades/comedy clothing!
I'm sure I read somewhere that they didn't play Motorcycle Emptiness live for a fair while as Nicky couldn't play it!
