Another thread resurrection!!

New single out now - "International Blue" from the album released in April called "Resistance Is Futile". Link below.... I think I like it though it is growing on me with every play and it sticks like an earworm which is always a good sign.

Hopefully, Father Christmas will bring me a ticket for a gig next year. Eight gigs, they're playing on my 50th birthday but in Llandudno which is pigging miles from here so may have to settle for Wembley Arena.

How bizarre (for me) that this thread has resurfaced - I've spent the last week or so listening to nothing but. Also odd that I'm not actually a rabid MSP fan and a lot of their stuff has really not fired me up at all.

Motorcycle Emptiness and Design for Life are just inspired, timeless and utterly fantastic pieces.

I was also sad enough to watch Series One of 'Game On' back in the 90's and absolutely loved the inclusion in one of the episodes of From Despair to Where. The lyrics really get me, especially in light of what (appears to have) happened with Richey.

Fantastic acoustic version here after 3 minutes or so:

I was never a big fan but like their better known songs. My 18 year old daughter loves them and I took her to see them at an open air gig in Bristol in June and was quite impressed. Going to the Cardiff gig in May and looking forward to it.

Was that the one by the Lloyds building in the Harbourside? That was a good gig, a few folk I know went to it.

That's the one, was a good night. The Cardiff gig should be a good one.

Looking forward to their new album although I didn't get tickets for the tour as I was really hoping they would play Brixton. Seen them there a few times and it has been amazing...may reconsider nearer the time

I only found out the other day they had a member who went missing and was not seen again.

Sad when you read about it

For the most part love 'em, but cannot abide The Holy Bible.....there I said it!

I saw them at the Danforth Music Hall on the HB 20th anniversary tour, even they said 'bear with us' halfway through the show!

I must be the 3rd person that loved 'The Great Western', I see where the comments about no singles come from, but thats not a bad thing in my mind.

Love most of the albums:

Gold Against the Soul (1993)
Everything Must Go (1996)
This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998)
Know Your Enemy (2001)
Lifeblood (2004)
Send Away the Tigers (2007)
Postcards from a Young Man (2010)
Futurology (2014)
Resistance Is Futile (2018) - sounds like one I will be buying....

Also like their various covers:

Suicide is Painless
Umbrella
Feels like Heaven
Can't Take my Eyes off of You

Just looked in itunes library....144 Manics tunes!

I do own Game On on DVD as well (the first Ben Chaplin series) I had just moved to London and was living in a flatshare in 1993....with an attractive young lady and an odd landlord, I was Martin the bank clerk, the From Despair to Where scene might have been re enacted more than once.

What do you think of Generation Terrorists?

I saw them live in the early 90s and loved them but was hugely disappointed by the albums -- too much gloss and sheen.
Obviously that's what they intended: one epic album and then disband but they leaned towards Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses too much for me.

But the Holy Bible? Easily their best album for me: sound, lyrics, song structures.

I do have the Motown Junk single and it still leaves me exhilarated - back to those days!

I don't think I've listened to anything they've done since Know your enemy: what's good since then?

I'm almost the opposite to you then.

Barely listened to the Manics pre-1993 and saw them live supporting Bon Jovi at MKB in September of that year. Liked them but it wasn't until Richey vanished and the music style changed somewhat that I got into listening to them. If they had stayed sounding like THB, chances are I wouldn't have given them a second listen.

Off to Wembley Arena in May for the fourth Manics gig. Would hardly call myself the world's biggest Manics fan but I do love their music and the stuff post-Richey certainly appeals more than the pre-Richey stuff.

I also have national treasures and forever delayed, so didn't think I was missing much from GT......but have just downloaded that as well.

I find THB painful to listen to, its not something i enjoy.....whereas a lot of the other stuff leaves me feeling exhilarated

Futurology is excellent, quite experimental for a band so far into their career.

My wife is no fan, but she came to the concert and came away with 2 observations : 1- she didn't much like THB either 2 - James Dean Bradfield doesn't get the respect he deserves as a guitarist or performer, she was blown away by how good he was.

So is anyone here admitting to buying the new album "Resistance Is Futile", released on Friday?

I may have invested in the signed deluxe limited edition one that duly arrived via the postie before the weekend. Definitely an album of two halves with the split coming after "Liverpool Revisited", track six. Not over enthusiastic about too many of the latter tracks but "International Blue" is as strong as it was on release four months ago. "People Give In" is another great track, albeit a little quirky and "Liverpool Revisited" is truly fantastic. Shame it's a little short at two and a half minutes but there you go.

Off to see them in just over a fortnight at Wembley Arena, supported by The Coral.

I'm still disappointed that they didn't keep their promise to split up after one album.

"We're not really splitting up, Blodwyn."

"fk that Boyo, I'm off to the seaside then."

A mate of mine is a very big fan and used to follow them on tour, hanging out with the band and has some pretty cool stories from back in the day. He rates them as the best British band since the Clash. Personally I quite enjoy their stuff, their lyrical content is head and shoulders more sophisticated than most UK pop/rock bands. I remember when 'Kevin Carter' came out - OK, not the greatest thing musically but who on earth else would have the balls to write lyrics about suicidal photojournalists whilst every other band is still wittering on about 'boy meets girl' type stuff...?

Well, went to see them at the SSE Arena (formerly Wembley Arena) on Friday night and they were outstanding, absolutely brilliant.

From the moment they burst into life with "International Blue" till the last embers of "Design For Life" nearly two hours later, they nailed it. They've done a song with The Anchoress on the new album and she was there in person to sing it plus two others (Little Baby Nothing and Your Love Alone). Nicky sang a song, a cover of the Sex Pistols "No Feelings" which went down a storm but they were just simply superb.

For those wanting a set list....

1. International Blue - Resistance Is Futile
2. Motorcycle Emptiness - Generation Terrorists
3. No Surface All Feeling - Everything Must Go
4. Distant Colours - Resistance Is Futile
5. Your Love Alone Is Not Enough - Send Away The Tigers
6. Little Baby Nothing - Generation Terrorists
7. Dylan & Caitlin - Resistance Is Futile
8. You Stole The Sun - This Is My Truth
9. Forever Delayed - n/r
10. The Masses Against The Classes - non-album song
11. Horses Under Starlight - n/r
12. Everything Must Go - Everything Must Go
13. If You Tolerate This - This Is My Truth
14. Faster - The Holy Bible
15. Stay Beautiful - Generation Terrorists
16. You Love Us - Generation Terrorists
17. Walk Me To The Bridge - Futurology
18. Hold Me Like A Heaven - Resistance Is Futile
19. Tsunami - This Is My Truth
20. No Feelings - Sex Pistols cover
21. People Give In - Resistance Is Futile
22. Slash And Burn - Generation Terrorists
23. A Design For Life - Everything Must Go

They are rather good live, I've just got back from Cardiff after seeing them last night with my daughter. James Dean Bradfield is a superb guitar player, underrated I think. The only thing that let it down for me was the st seating at motorpoint arena. Still, my daughter is a massive fan and had a great time which is the main thing.

I saw them after Gold against the soul was released, in Portsmouth. Astonishing energy from the band and the crowd. The sound was excellent too.
Later I saw them doing the holy bible live and that too was really impressive.
Well worth a watch.
