Well looks like they are back:

Stone Roses ‘to reunite’
The Manchester band will reform later this year despite suffering one of the worst public break-ups in rock history, The Sun has reported this morning.

They aren't:

But by the end of the day, the story that led one fan to tweet: "A Stone Roses reunion would make my life" had been denied. Mani did little to hide his anger. "I'm disgusted that my personal grief has been invaded and hijacked by these nonsensical stories," he told the NME, referring to the meeting of Brown and Squire at his mother's funeral.

"Two old friends meeting up after 15 years to pay their respects to my mother does not constitute the reformation of the Stone Roses. Please fk off and leave it alone. It isn't true and isn't happening."

Why do people even want them to re-form? You know it would be rubbish! They are very much of their time, and their debut is a classic... but some cash-in live gigs would be terrible. Plus Ian Brown gets worse and worse as a live vocalist!

While I think Ian may be up for it, I also really believe that John Squire would never do it given what he has said over the years.

I got into them in the mid-90s, going backwards via Oasis as I was too young at the time. I love the debut, although some of it sounds a bit dated now. The singles are amazing though... Waterwall, She Bangs The Drums and the full length Resurrection are probably their peak. The Second Coming also has its moments (probably 50% good, 50% bad!).

I don't think Ian would be up for it at all. He's achieved so much since the Roses that he doesn't have to go back. I never got to see them live, but from what I've heard, I wasn't missing much, so would rather they didn't reform.

I am glad that bands reform and play..it's not always a disaster and has allowed to see a whole host of bands that otherwise I would never have got to see. The highlight of the bunch being The Pixies.

As The Roses came out with a sound that no one else was doing at the time, I feel that they aren't very dated at all. I first listened to their debut shortly after my first proper relationship breaking up. And played it at least once(sometimes 2 or 3 times) every day for about 6 months. It certainly has a time and a place for me. smile

3 or 4 years ago I saw Ian at Glastonbury, and he actually sounded quite good. Yeah, lots of reverb on the mike, but it worked.

A) Will they reform? All bands reform when the cash runs out, It's not as if any of them are selling loads of records today.

B) Will they be as good as they were? No, but that never stopped bands from the 70s and 80s touring (Rolling Stones, U2, etc).

Some of my favourite bands..The Smiths, The Jam, Ride, Afghan Whigs and The Clash(when they were still able to..) haven't/didn't.

I would pay hundreds to see any of those bands live...I live in hope. smile

I've always had a soft spot for the Stone Roses, and was into their music first time around, being 16 years old in 1990. I remember people in my class at school listening to WetWetWet and Bon Jovi rolleyesrolleyes and the Roses were a breath of fresh air at the time.

Re. the cover bands. I've not seen any of them. I do know that Ian played a gig up north years ago, playing mainly/only? Stone Roses tunes...and he used one as his backing band. Who else would know all of the songs backwards, besides his old band mates?
Haaa, I thought that only happened in the film "Rock Star" with Mark Warlberg!

The Totals are playing in Leeds on May 20th. I think i'm gonna head down.... might be a larf.
OT but I believe Brian Wilson used a Beachboys tribute act for his 2005 tour inc Glastonbury and very good they were too

Also, 'I am the resurrection' smile

Yeah, seems to be the done thing. A lot of tribute bands are session musicians anyway, it says on the totals website that they are. Check this out, I think its pretty good:

Another band I wished I'd seen, along with 'Floyd in '94.

They aren't going to reunite any time soon, so forget that idea.

1) Fools Gold
2) Waterfall (check out the live version, as introduced by Tony "Oh I wish I'd signed them to Factory" Wilson on YT)
3) Begging You

Loved the Stone Roses, and subject Windsorphil Jnr to it on the school run much ti his embarrasment. I bought a painting from John Squire and met him - to say it's a mistake to meet your heroes is an understatement, he was an arse.

What an awesome relic to possess! smile

I wasn't old enough to start going to gigs/ festivals until around '95, by which time the indie (/ Britpop) bandwagon had got a little dissolved into the mainstream IMHO - wish I could have memories of things like the Spike Island gig!

There was an awesome night of mostly '91ness (Roses, The Scream, 808, Ride, early Blur etc.) on BBC 4 a couple of Fridays ago - brought back some wonderful memories of teenage years! smile
