That has made a very tired man laugh... and I agree, maybe we should offer discounts to exhibitors based on quality of promo staff.

I agree 100% on the electricity stand, unfortunatley my 'influence' only extends to the PH section of the show.

I like the idea's and suggestions so far, keep em coming. I have a meeting next week for ideas, theme's and feedback, all this is very helpful.
Remember that you wont please everybody as its appeal is far too broad.

1) There is a healthy amounf of trade going on, and sponsors meeting driers etc. This is, of course the core of the show- what it originally was, and still plays an important part on the trade days

2) People who come because they like the cars. They wont care about those in (1) above, but like to see cars. These are by far the biggest contingent, who see the Autosport show as entertainment and a car show with a bit of glamour from girls and the off driver. But they dont learn about new racing series, or buy much

3) People who come hoping to see ladies flash their bits. On Thursday I noticed a group of men with big lenses taking photos of the women only. Ehen one took a photo from a distance of a girl kneeling down, he then said "got that one. Where was the other one you said about??" to his mates, both of whom had cameras as well

It gave me the impression he wasnt there for the cars, but probably does post on a different website, to other men... I think this group is bigger then you might think too

4) Those who like motor racing and cars, and who do use the show to catch up, see what's racing in 2010 etc. I would assume these are a minority, as there are now very few of us who watch club racing on a sunday afternoon.

There is probably a 5 and 6 too. But my point is, you cant please these groups at the same time, so a balance must be struck. Those who fall into 1) wont care for the pouting girls or the cars. Those in 2 wont really care about the latest 5 axis engineering lathes unles there's a car on the stand. And those in 3 wont care about anything as long as there's a lot of flesh on show.

Seriously:

The Autosport Show was originally the Racing Car Show. Then Bought/sponsored by Haymarket.

PH became an addition when Haymarket purchased PH.

Fundamentally I believe Haymarket need to manage people's expectations.

If I was going to spend £29 + £2 booking fee and £8 car parking just to see the PH show in the corner of hall 20 I might be a bit miffed. The PH bit is getting better and continues to go in the right direction. Sometimes it is the little things like the brilliant idea of Riggers/Garlick having their names on their jackets. That was class.

Manage people's expectations - I've been going to the show for years, I know what it costs and exactly what I'm letting myself in for. From the comments on this forum it seems that there were a large number of 1st time visitors.

For example if you buy a programme at a MSVR circuit event there is a page devoted to food. What you can get, where you can get it from, when you can get it and how much it will cost. Including meal deals - As a Marshal I bring my own so I don't need to buy, but I know what I could.

BTW – The price on the show guide was £10 – Well done to whoever decided that was stupid and made the decision to give it away.

I agree that the live action show should be separate - It used to be. Again, I've seen loads of them and I'm bored with them.

Technology is great - Previously you could listen to the guys being rather controversial being interviewed on the stage. Not now, just as PC as elsewhere. Thank you 'You Tube' - But just being able to listen to Martin/Johnny/Alan having a chat and the interview with Jenson was a good part of the show.

Personally I think that the 911 Turbo display had a woeful lack of quantity, although the quality was rather good. (Although nowt to do with HM or PH)

PH is always going to have a hard time with the car display as January is hardly the best time for people’s P&J to be out – Mine isn’t and a trailer is about £200 each way – I do think what you do get could be better presented as previously mentioned (Maker/Model etc)

Genuine thanks for the words gents. I think it wise to keep this thread up-dated with progress and idea's. If it's ok, i would like to to bounce idea's off of you lot during the next few months.

I know that it is impossible to please everyone, but I would like to have a go at pleasing MORE of you.

can any one suggest a club contact at the following;

Lamborghini Owners
Skyline Owners
Ferrari owners
SELOC
Bentley Owners (I know left field but indulge me)

I have already had conversations about an instructional area (for detailing in the first instance) and also will be meeting with the Ace Cafe to see if there is some way round the NEC food issue.

keep the good stuff coming.

ps. I love lotus girl.

My view as a long time autosport show attendee - as member of public not in the industry.

Enjoyed the show again this year but less so than previously. The whole show seemed smaller than previous years and discussing with the friend I attend with we are thinking about giving it a miss next year.

Many of the exhibits were the same as previous years. Its great to get a close view of (for example) a Lotus GP car but the same interest is not there seeing the same car several years in a row. Spent a lot of time looking around a 6R4 but I believe that is the first time they have been there.

There seemed to be less cars in the Pistonheads area (appreciate some were missing due to the weather) with more space taken by trade stands.
Would be a good idea to group identical cars together and perhaps have a rota of enthusiasts to answer questions or give talks about the displayed mark of car.
Was looking forward to the 'stuff' area and being able to view the latest hifi and gadgets but this area was very small. Something to expand on in the future?

Some more comment more related to autosport rather than pistonheads - hope they can be passed on.
The live action show had improved this year. Seem to offer a bit more variety. Although I don't think the collision of the two rally cross cars was part of the plan!

It was difficult to get an idea of when driver interviews were happening and very crowded around the autosport stage and the dunlop stage. Could seating be added? Or include some more driver interview as part of the live action show.

Don't think that ticket price or cost of food should be to much of a worry. It is very comparable to any type of event these days.

All businesses need feedback from customers ears

I suggest that you ask your exhibiting clients whether they want the students there on trade days. I suspect you'll find that the justification you gave in another thread is fundamentally flawed and works against you.

By the way, I'm first in the queue for the Lotus girl biglaugh

I did ask, lot of people.

It needs discussing here at PH towers but this year more than others I noticed that there are two types of student.

The first wearing suits or branded team shirts, with their course badges on asking sensible questions about apprenticships etc. the second in a hoodie asking for freebies and taking picture of 'well fit b*tches' .. I use a direct quote.

There are now talks a foot to regulate this more strictly... somehow, not excluding the genuine interest, but cutting out those who got the ticket form a mate on the course.

will keep you posted.

PS- lotus girl is now appearing in the pages of autosport magazine - seem's we weren't the only ones to spot her.

Glad to hear that you guys're listening to what the paying customer are saying. As I said in the other thread; the serious students will not be put off, and Natural Selection will prevail.

+1 on the prices - ridiculous.

I found the show very dull compared to previous years, very little to see, absolutely rock-all to do, no autojumble, no theatre in the staging.

Having cancelled my Autospot sub (sorry guys you're getting repetitive!) I found it hard to find info on the show.

And even though the show was half-empty on Friday, somehow NEC managed to manufacture queues for everything all day long - signing in, food, drink, toilets.

This year's petty annoyance was legions of people pestering you to subscribe to magazines, very irritating to pay £30+ be treated as a captive market to be trawled for more money.

So, sadly, having had great fun running stands and visiting previous shows, this will be the last one for me.

and here is the lesson , you are losing your market , listen and learn - less pestering , encourage the low end and autojumble sellers (I guess stall fees are now way over-priced), lose the sleazy looking girls , don't fleece us for entry , parking , food and drinks etc

oh and more girls like the one on the Lotus stand.

Surely the obvious lesson is to drop the Live show from the price and either keep it as an optional extra or drop it altogether.
How many people go to the show specifically to see the Live show?

£100 for tickets, travel and parking for 2 people put me off going.

From what I've seen and read there is little I missed and certainly nothing I havent seen before. When I first went it cost something like £15 for the ticket with the 'live action arena' an optional extra. You should give people the option of choosing whether or not they want to see it.

In its current form and price there's no way I would consider going.
