Excellent.... I've got nothing except a recovery strap, a bacon buttie and a map.... Think I'll take it easier through the water this time though.... one repair bill's enough!

A much quieter trip this time with just the 2 vehicles, myself and Ozzy... The OS map proved to be of no use, so we just followed our noses, there was no activity on the plain today, so all the byways were open. Despite all the rain over the last few days, most of the tracks were dry and in good condition, we still found a few big puddles though! After the engine killing antics of the last trip, we both took it pretty steady for around 3 hours before heading to a local pub for Sunday lunch.

Why was the map of no use? I believe photo no 2 is showing you somewhere you should never be. I stand to be corrected though.....

I had a standard LandRanger map (and a previous edition at that) it was handy for the main tracks, but not all of the byways are marked on it.
As far as photo 2 goes, I don't believe we're somewhere we shouldn't be.... because I don't know the plain very well, we stuck to marked byways and made sure when necessary that there were no flags present (there weren't) That photo was taken in a small concreted car park type thing to one side of the byway, I just pulled the front wheels up onto a little bank to make a more interesting image.
As I say, I don't think we transgressed, we were both conscious of where we were and were careful... the one thing I would say though is that the Plain can be confusing, it's very easy to wander off-piste, hence we stuck to more marked tracks.

We're lucky that we're allowed on the Plain at all - if we inadvertantly stray off piste, one day it might all be shut to us for good Still, glad you two had a good day out - sorry I couldn't come - next time, promise! Nice pics by the way, thanks for posting. Ozzy - did you drive happily to work in the old girl today mate?

Photo2 is an entirely legal location as long as the flags aren't flying.

As has been said .. Photo 2 is Fine ... I would be suprised if they even managed to get half way close to the actual location is any flags were flying as all 4 photos are about as central as you can get to the "Central Training Area" !!
That is the beauty of the Training Area, Wilts Council with the MOD have made sure all the rights of way are clearly marked at all intersections. Plus the locations you are in are quite close to the bombardment areas (actually your smack in between Larkhill and Westdown impact areas) so any deviation from the path "could" be fatal

I stand to be corrected though..... feel free to join us in the next venture, experience and knowledge is always welcome. The more the merrier And all that! I speak for myself but I'm sure del would not mind me saying were both new to this and if a few experienced tour guides want to come then great. It will ensure no one goes or Does anything they shouldnt.

As I said, I stand to be corrected! It looks spookily similar to one of the impact areas, which are never opened to the public, for obvious reasons. The interesting thing with navigating the plain, are that many legal routes are just a line on a map across ao open area, with no obvious route. Conversely, many of the visible tracks/routes, are not a legit right of way. Have fun out there.

Would be interested to come to one of these.
Can you please confirm that all areas/activities will be 100% legal?

Yep, none of us have any interest in being where we shouldn't so we make sure that we're on legal, open byways, we check with the range wardens before we travel etc. At the end of the day we're lucky to have this resource to play on, if people start going where they shouldn't then eventually all access will be revoked - not something that we want!

Well I suppose that outcome would remove the uncertainty over the Jeep.... a small cooling issue pales into insignificance when you're bringing the car home in a cardboard box!!
