Cough,cough.
Ermm, so that's not a dummy, drill round or training aid is it?
If it arrived at several meters per second from overhead, wouldn't it be just a little bit buried?

While I appreciate the subtlety of your rhetoric, to be honest,I couldn't give a chuff what it was. It was one of about 70 devices we saw, including comedy mortar 'type' tails poking from the ground. Not to mention countless craters, both large and small.
The point of my post, and previous mutterings, was as a result of a so called "expert" who assured me he knew the legal and legit rights of way across the plain many years ago. That was the last time I ever trusted anyone to do that, and have since tooled myself up with MM on a couple of devices, up to date OS maps,Range Warden and Salisbury Ops numbers, and ensuring my maps are up to date with the definitive map prior to going out every time. That was right up until I got a little bored of offroading due to the influx of good old British 'redneckery!'.

Completely agree about redneckery. The Plain especially seems to have acquired the status of freebie Pay and Play site, apparently on the basis that MOD land = tax payer's land = public land.
I don't get the connection between military debris and legality of a right of way though. There's junk all over the Plain, so the presence of ordnance doesn't automatically imply an area is out of bounds at the time. I've been across there when the flags are down, but the craters are still smouldering from the last lot of firing.

Oh, we were certainly out of bounds. As you know, there are some impact areas that are never opened to the public.

No, not lucky as such, just not melodramatic and sensationalist either.

For once Crossflow Kid, I agree with you smile

I recall a few years ago, they used the TA Pilots to "spot" civillian vehicles when they were trying to get their flying hours up prior to Afhganistan deployment. I think that was a good year "revenue" too.
