Our Jeep has road tyres fitted that will need replacing soon.

I was thinking of fitting all-terrains, to help with green-laning and the odd snow fall.

What are the downsides, if any? How much impact do ATs have on noise, wear and mpg when driving on tarmac?

It depends on what type/model of AT tyres you plan to fit?

Generally something along the lines of a General Grabber AT2 or BFG AT KO will handle pretty much like a set of std 'road' tyres. On my old XJ I changed the std Eagles for BFG AT and it was a major improvement. The Eagles were pretty new but handling in the wet was an experience! The BFG's do generate a bit more noise but not too intrusive IMHO. But after around 30k miles, even though they still had around 10k more wear left, they started to get a bit twitchy in the wet when in 2WD. A common problem. Offroad (fields, trails etc.) they were superb.

Sarge will probably be along in a bit with his insider opinion.

If I was buying again I would go with the AT2 or Hancook Dynapro wink

Went from Scorpions to BF Goodrich ATs, no problem at all with noise handling or anything. Glad I did it when it snowed and they are great fun on Salisbury Plane in the mud.

I run BFG AT's they are the replacement for the AT2.

No problem with road noise, great in the mud and snow even given that mine are 255 55 18's on my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Seconded .. Dad has AT2's on his standard Jimny, 3 years running the little Jimny has remained sure footed.

I ran Falken LA/AT T110 tyres for a while. As a rough figure, I'd say they're 80% road bias, but they do provide much better off road ability than a pure 'highway' tyre.

I figured I'd sacrafice some off road performance for good level of grip with a couple of ton of truck doing 60mph on an A road! Only pride to hurt if you get a bit stuck in some mud, although they where fine towing a trailer through regular woodland in the snow.

Tyres...............what do I know about them, now let me think !!!!

Tyres are a personal choice as most will say what they have fitted is the best tyre ever.

All Terrain tyres will tick most boxes on most vehicles and I find works best for me and the rest of my family, BFG AT KO on my Amazon as General don't do a 285/65x18 in the AT, wifes Invinceable is on General AT as the AT2 is no longer available in 265/65x17, as with most other sizes due to EU noise regulations (total c**k).

There are a few AT2 sizes still available which are classed as commercial......i.e. 235/75x15, 225/75x16, 235/85x16 and 265/75x16 and still very popular, we have found them to be better in the wet than BFG AT KO's, maybe not last as long though.

The new General AT is now available in many, many sizes just take a look on the web, great tyres and the most popular choice from my experience, I am off tyre testing at the end of the month in Spain with General/Contental, a new MT tyre is prommised, I say General/Contental as Conti own General, great quality tyres.

Now thats the right answer, must have not seen the wood for the trees........mind you lots say why not call it AT3 but Cooper nicked it.

Well the AT2 was a replacement for the previous AT which is even more confusing!

I had to replace two of my GG AT2s (P38 RR) and could only get the new ATs. To be honest, they seem just as good but they seem to be slightly noisier on tarmac, which doesn't seem to make sense given the AT2s were banned due to 'noise'.

Not wishing to hijack the thread but at least it concerns a Jeep and AT's biggrin


Quick question for Sarge or anyone else, any experience of the Cooper AT3?

I'm possibly looking at getting 235/70/17s fitted to the GC to replace the various 235/65/17 tyres on it at the minute.

Sarge/PH Massive - similarly to OP, I'm looking at changing - my Amarok is running factory road biased 19" Continentals, lovely on tarmac, bambi on mud, replacement choices appear limited in 19", what would you recommend?

We had bridgestone duelers on our GC (WJ 4.7) and switched to General UHP's 2 winters ago. They have no sipes and a road biased tread pattern (like a Toyo T1r) but very deep cut.
I can't say I have found them lacking in two winters of snow FWIW.
