You can get a winch mount that fits to the tow bar reciever and put one on the front then you fit the winch where you want it.
I wonder why no one else has thought of that.......

A few winch companys do a winch mount designed to be stowed in the boot and clip on to the tow ball when needed, one of those and a towball front and rear and your sorted.

Probably coz it's so chuffin' heavy!!!

FWIW - The Camel Freelanders were fitted with a portable winch, which could be run on either the front or the rear and mounted in the boot when not in use. It was only the small WARN M5000DSP but it's still heavy!

The winch little bro put on the SJ was bloody heavy. Handling is 'interesting' now, and it was 'interesting' enough beforehand. There is a truck at a garage I have been to with the winch in the rear passenger footwell, with the tube going fore, and aft. Very nice.

I have one on the front of my disco which I only bought because both the bumper and winch were heavilly discounted. I paid £100 for the bumper and about £250 for the winch. Despite this, I would have a tirfor. Not the easiest of things to use but you can pull in any direction as long as you have suitable recovery points. Ideal if you have gone sideways by accident or worse still upside down.

I have an electric winch on the front of my Defender and also carry a hand winch for pulling out backwards.
