might as well post the "fleet" (the jeep is around the corner out of sight)
Ohhh, you're a strange one then - with Landies AND a Jeep? Most people have one or the other, and defend their marque with the kind of loyalty reserved for rival Portsmouth / Southampton footie fans, lol! What Jeep do you have mate? And how do they compare?

I bought the jeep as I needed a cheap 4x4 to get out and about in the countryside for my photography and general family duties. I tried the discovery route first, but they all tended to be rot-boxes.
Ultimately I decided on a home-built defender, set up how I wanted it, but in the mean time the jeep suffices
I have to say I have gotten quite attached to it and find it an excellent family car.
The land rover is obviously more versatile and is more capable/more interior room, but people prefer to ride in the jeep and for that reason I have kept it.
Jeep pros:
Smooth, quiet, good engine, reliable so far, cruise control, good in the snow
Jeep cons:
Thirsty, quite compact inside, viscous transfer case is a weak point
Land Rover pros:
Endlessly versatile, don't mind bolting things to it, can be rough with it offroad, can carry my pushbike without removing the front wheel
Land Rover cons:
Crap engines, crap gearbox, noisy, slow, girls don't like riding in it

Nothing wrong with liking both marques. Spotted a lustworthy Series 1 Lardy in Stebbing today, followed a few minutes later by an equally nice 1943 GPW.
You still didn't mention which Jeep you have though...
sorry... it's a 1998 Grand Cherokee Orvis with the 4.0 straight 6You still didn't mention which Jeep you have though...
I've just converted the transfer case to 2wd/4wd selectable and am loving the RWD in the mud

Had a foot in both camps myself, plus Suzuki too. I keep hankering after a 110 again but my Grand is better in all respects now apart from price of parts & boot space.
I love the seats in the jeep... i'm planning on swapping some jeep seats into the defender at some pointskyrover said:

Do all the Grands of that era only come with "4WD Part Time"/"4WD Full Time"? And no Low Range?I've just converted the transfer case to 2wd/4wd selectable and am loving the RWD in the mud
I was just looking at some on eBay and the photos only show the range selector has two settings (+ Neutral obviously)
My 2001 4L (non Grand) Cherokee has 2WD Full Time, 4WD Full Time, 4WD Part time (centre diff locked) and 4WD Low range (also centre locked) and a rear LSD as it's a 60th anniversary model.
I had the 2.5 TD model first but it was manual and slow as hell and only had 2WD full time which was not great for semi slippy conditions when you couldn't use 4WD with the difflock so swapped to the 4L and it's a great car.
I assumed the grands would have all those options too and was looking at swapping as they're bigger inside and more comfy but don't really want to lose all the drive options!
Do you still have centre diff lock and rear LSD and low range or not?
Do some of them have all the drive modes?
Sorry for all the questions!
Thanks
Nope, Grands have 4wd hi & 4wd low and thats it. Older ZGs have the 249 viscus transfer case, later WGs have the 247 with a clutch pack so it runs 2wd automatically on roads and it only 4wd when the front & rear axle speeds are different. I have ditched the 247 on mine & stuck in a 242 out of a cherokee so I can have real 4wd.

This... The Np-242 is what you wantTimbuk2 said:
I can't be bothered with all that fuss, I'll just stick to my Cherokee which I guess already has the 242!
It's an afternoons work to swap them over... here's a step by step guide http://kevinsoffroad.com/techarticles/Solitude%202...
It's the best motor I've had for a long time. Costs a bit to look after but does everything I need from it with ease and comfort. I am a bit OCD with it though, she gets detailed twice a year and valeted every month.
