I've moved on from my first Disco above.

Many Defenders, a swb Shogun and other Discos inbetween but now settled for this ML320.

Chalk and cheese of course but performed superbly on a trip to Andorra last week!

What are these like to drive on the road?

Never even been in a pick up. Make more and more sense for my usage.

Here's Bluey our 110 Defender which we completely rebuilt to take on the Australian outback. We spent 6 months travelling from Fremantle WA to Dubbo NSW.
The photos were taken as we crossed the red centre of Australia on The Great Central Road.

The sharp eyed of you might spot the thermometer in the rear window reading an ambient temp of 42 degrees.

By one of Len Beadell's marker posts.

Airing down the tyres a little more on the border between WA and the NT where the road quality nosedived!

At the start of the Fisheries Track to Israelite Bay. A 60km drive which ended up taking 3 to 4 hours. I'd already aired down the tyres but as soon as I hit the soft sand we got bogged so I reversed up and aired down some more.

Little chap in the middle front seat?

I do love that about Oz. The tarmac just stops when it wants and then you're left to drive over the rough roads. Then the tarmac will start again as it goes into a town, through the town, out of the town and then stop again. I'd love to tour Australia some more.

I was confused at first as Abby wasn't in any of the photos until I realised that the three bikes were a bit of a giveaway! We were already well on with the rebuild when our camper for two had to accommodate three. When we did the trip Abby was four so there was just enough space for all of us.

Here are some off-roaders in my back garden today, mostly 2 wheel drive but they don't appear to be having any issues with the sticky conditions.

I was on my 1 wheel drive Cross bike.

I should've recognised it then. Used to be stationed in Bulford and used Carter barracks as a route onto the plain for biking.

This was my favourite off-roader, a heavily modified 101FC.

It had a custom built coil sprung chassis with Range Rover axles, engine and gearbox moved back by 10 inches, competition roll cage, power steering and Defender seats. I stripped numerous layers of military paint off with an angle grinder then painted it yellow - it was my mates' idea to call it The Big Banana Barney (I lived in Barnard Castle) It still had its Rover V8 in it, it sounded brilliant!

I used to love driving those, we had a fleet of them on 19Sqn at Brize Norton in the early 90's. I managed to get one stuck in a pond whilst driver training at an old quarry in Oxfordshire, had to wait out to anchor the winch. The winch on those things are subject to a whole catalogue of disasters in themselves........Don't depress the clutch!!!!!

How are these things offroad? One is in the market for a new set of wheels. Currently considering an RRS or a Toureg.....

Was that the one build by Malcolm Whitbread which he entered a comp safari in?

We had a 07 tdv8 sport, on general grabber at tyres it was very capable, the traction control is immense coupled with very good axle articulation it always impressed from green lanes in Yorkshire to pulling trailers up wet grass fields + it never broke down (supprisngly)! Friends Touareg was good offroad but articulation was poor and its traction control seemed to give up when wheels lifted of the ground so it needed a more 'momentum' led style which I'm not a fan off.

Tyres are a huge factor tho on the RRS it was transformed off road when we fitted the grabbers, + they lasted very well 30,000 when we traded it!

Good info thanks for that! Tyres always make a suprising amount of difference on any "off roader"! Even something basic like my current Frontera..

My trooper. It's been a bit of a mission getting it running properly - I got properly turned over by the guy who sold it - but it's a proper go-anywhere machine.

Gonna get rid soon - don't ever use it.

Yep thats the one! When I saw it at the 1996 ARC National I totally fell in love with it, when it later appeared in my local garage at Staindrop I had no choice but to buy it even though it was running a bit rough.

This is him competing in the Team Recovery (my favourite)

Here he is in the Comp Safari

It was a wet and muddy year

I loved driving it, off road it was damn near unstoppable, on road it was a real head turner, especially on the days I could strip it down.
