you think that just because you pay between £100-500 a year for your VED that you own the road.

So maybe instead of whinging about where your inconsequential drop of VED goes into fixing the roads (it's probably gobbled up clearing crisps packets off the M1 anyway), you could focus your attention into being more constructive with your energy?
You're not a very nice guy are you?

I don't really care very much to debate this with you, save to say that, yes, I do feel that because I pay tax to use something that this should give me a say as to how it is used. I also feel that if others don't pay to use it then, morally speaking, they should not have as much say.

I will not debate this with you any further.

Good because you're deliberately skipping over the point that these "ramblers" have the same rights and say that you do since they have paid for the roads in the same way you do. wink

If we really want to get into it I have two cars which cost £465 each to tax, I pay around £40k a year in income tax and I dread to think what I pay on VAT-qualifying purchases on top of that as well as fuel duty (I put over £17k a year into fuel). Does that mean I have a greater right to the roads than someone who doesn't have a car and a low paid job? I doubt it very much and I wouldn't be so arrogant as to assume otherwise.
Fair point, but would you agree you're arrogant enough to proclaim your wealth in public?
Most vulgar.

That's great. So when will they realise that those same rights and say apply to everybody, and that repeatedly shouting "Go away!" or words to that effect doesn't add any more weight to their argument?

Yes I agree, in hindsight it does read as very crass. However my point was that just because you pay VED doesn't mean you have rights over non-vehicular users. The simple fact that most ramblers will have probably paid VED on the car they used to get to the lanes they are walking on kinda moots the argument "Well I pay my VED and they don't so I can drive anywhere I damn well like" argument.

I'd stand by anyone here who tells them to go jump, my issue was with the VED is car tax, and car tax pays for the roads, so motorists get to say what happens to said roads.

Car tax doesn't pay for the roads at all. Local council and government pays for the roads, via council tax and general taxation.

Great, such a promising thread full of videos has turned into a tedious argument about greenlaning and road tax. All we need now is for 300bhp/tonne to wade in and the PH tedium cycle will be complete.

Not knowing anything about off roading, I leave myself open to being told I'm an idiot. But this doesn't seem like the best example of a water crossing I've ever seen hehe

Unusually for PH, a well rounded and reasonable reply. (and really, I'm not taking the piss).
I think the VED argument stems from people's belief that as long as they've met every obligation of the law they have every right to act within it. Since VED is a prerequisite to using Public RoW and green lanes are, on the whole, Public RoW payment of VED is seen as possibly one of the only indications that someone is operating their vehicle legally.

Yeah, sorry about that. So to drown myself out here's a different kind of f*ckwittery. A journo spending several hours in a Range Rover Supercharged that he is convinced is a Land Rover Discovery 4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAsZO7C0FXc

There were both vehicles there. He was driving an LR4 I think, as it said Land Rover on the front, and she was driving the Range Rover, which was also shown.

I await getting a telling off.

There were LR4's there but he was definitely in a Range (look at the ending shot before you see the lovely girl talking). Look at the side vents of the car he's next to and also the interior is a RR interior. They do winch him out with a LR4 at one point though, and he's daft enough to stand right next to the cable while it's being winched.
