Any experiences of the Jimny?
Discussion
I'm a huge Landy fan and owner of 3. But honestly the Jimny is a fantastic little off roader and something I'd compare to a Wrangler or Defender in ability.
That said, if you aren't actually going to be off roading much in it, or simply want it for use in the snow, then a SWB Toyota Rav4 is probably a better bet.
The Jimny has no centre diff, so is RWD for normal road use, and with an open rear diff will mean 1wd if it gets slippery and you don't use 4wd.
So the driver needs to know how and when to use 4wd and when not to use it.
The Rav4 isn't so much of an off roader by a huge margin, but it is going to be superior to any car. They also have a centre diff, so are AWD all the time and with a simple switch on the dash to lock the centre diff. In the hands of a novice the Rav4 will be an easier tool to use in snowy conditions with less driver input.

what about a little subaru justy, they are cheap to insure and 4x4 i think. Same as the old suzuki swift by the looks of it, getting hold of one might be hard mind
Panda 4x4?
or any cheap hatch back with the correct tyres would do well in the snow
Are kia doing any deals on cars with free insurance, if your gf qualifies it could work out cheap once you've factored in insurance

Our family run about is a Jimny. Bought new in 2010, it's now done 19,000 miles without any problems at all. The automatic option was ticked, I was dubious, but it suits the car (and I wasn't buying so I didn't get a say).
I was 19/20 with 0 NCB when I was named on the insurance, the premium was around £600-700.
Here's the beast:

Insurance is the main issue here, not for me because I am an old fart but for the GF who hasn't passed her test yet.I was 19/20 with 0 NCB when I was named on the insurance, the premium was around £600-700.

Just a quick update: We are now actually ready to buy a 4x4. Having spent a year thinking about it & saving a little bit of money we are now actively looking. We spotted a Shogun Pinin local to us for sale which was actually owned by my mum about 9 years ago but we missed out on it by 10 mins.
We are not ruling out most 4x4's & these are in the running. We have a maximum of 2k to spend.
Shogun Pinin
Jimny
Freelander
Rav 4
Vitara
Wouldn't rule out others if something came up with in our budget.
