Hello!

I know this has been overdone now so I apologies for starting it again. I have recently sold my defender 90 as I was wanting a long wheelbase 110. The defender for being such a great vehicle was not something that I would look forward to doing long distance in so I am now looking at other pickups available. I know I won't find a pickup as good as the defender offroad unless I get a 110 pickup however I was just looking for any opinions or experiences of pickups offroad.

I am currently looking at navaras (rapidly going off these with all the reviews!) or a hilux however I am open to any other suggestions of good offroad pickups. The hiluxs I have been looking at is the older 5th gen ones (2005 model)as they just look more robust than the older models.

Do any of these pickups has diff lock? I know it won't be like the defenders center diff as mostly all the pickups are only selectable 4wd however I can't find any exact answers on if the pickups have a diff lock system or no? I really want something with a diff lock of some sort as its helped me out alot in the old landy.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My 2010 mitsubishi l200 Trojan has centre and rear diff locks as standard. Pretty sure centre diff lock is standard on all l200 models with rear diff lock as an option on some and standard in others...

You do realise that putting a selectable 4wd into 4wd gives the same setup as a Defender with the centre diff locked? Because selectable 4wds don't have a centre diff as a rule.

I used to be a Geotech engineer and we had both modded 110s and HiLux pickups for site work; they often had to be pushed to their limits.

The 110s were definitely a lot more capable when they weren't broken down - the pick ups (when not loaded) were too light at the back end and often spun their wheels. However they were a lot more reliable and comfortable on long drives!

Hi,

I recently swapped my 110 DCPU for a Hilux, so hope I can help. I love land rovers and the adventurus feeling that they give you when you drive one. Plus they are british and they are an icon, a jap pick up will never hold a place in your heart like a defender may. But I don't regret selling my land rover at all. It had a load of problems, quite serious ones and it was only 1.5years old. Plus not great long distant and comes with no creature comforts at all. Plus very expensive compared to pick ups. Although they hold their value a lot better.

The toyota is very comfy, nice to drive and Bluetooth phone etc is very nice. It's more economical. Loads more room for passengers. And loads more room in the pick up bit for tools/dogs/body's. Whatever it is you need to transport.

As for the off road ability, it is softer than the defender and as said can be light on the back end. By soft I mean it would break easier if abused. Having said that though, I've got all terrain tyres on mine and it is very good off road. I suppose it depends how extreme you take things. I'm a farmer and I also shoot a lot, so do a fair bit of off the Tarmac driving and I'm yet to be in a situation when the defender would of managed but the pick up won't. Plus it will get you there warmer, and in more comfort. Plus you won't need to pry passengers with a jemmy bar.

Hope that helps.

Brings back memories of venture scout trips to dartmoor and cornwall. 12 People in a 110 Defender, 3.5t trailer on the back, Loud music all the way and the smell of our leader's roll-ups drifting through the cabin! Good laugh were those trips!

Mates forestry company bought a pair of L200s 3 or 4 years back, many problems later (including gearbox rebuilds sub-30,000km on both of them) he isn't impressed compared to their older Hiluxes and Navaras.

I've had a few work Hiluxes and they've all been pretty good, we do a fair bit of easy offroad stuff but not much thats really rugged.
