Well after much looking about / studying i think one of the following might be best for her -

SUZUKI SX4 4GRIP
TERIOS
QASHQAI

and for my little toy that will go off road shooting / fishing -

3dr GRAND VITARA 1.9 DDIS

Good or bad choices ?

Unless the farm track is really really bad then buy a golf

We are fine where we are and we have 1/2 a mile of farm track and 5 miles before we see a road that has ever seen a gritter
The phrase 'the roads are really bad round here, we need a 4x4' comes up quite a lot on PH, especially after a bad winter wink

In reality, they want any excuse to buy a 4x4...

My suggestions:

Rav4 (Quite pricey and the interior is very early 90s, but will do the job well)
Land Rover FL2 (Its a LR, so be prepared for it to break. You are at the bottom of the price range for FL2s
Nissan X-Trail (Getting a bit old now, but you will get a mint one for 5k)

The worst things about Golf's and farm tracks are low ground clearance and alloy sump, my wife is on sump number 7 on a 12 year old golf. I've been looking about for a replacement and the best I've seen is a Suzuki SX4 but if fuel consumption wasn't an issue, I'd have a Subaru without any hesitation.

Honda CR-V ? not perm 4WD so save on fuel and wear.

Cheap to tax, reliable as anything, good work horse, bags of room and nice to drive.

my only gripe and this is with the previous shape as i haven't tried the new one - they seem a little underpowered. The 2.2 Diesel was the better one.

Time for a small update -

Golf R lacks ground clearance ( I owned one for a few months but had to get rid) as it caught on said farm track
x-trail to big for her

If an X-trail is "too big" then the options are the Panda or a Jimny really, as you've ruled out a D90.

VW Golf:

Length 4,255 mm (167.5 in)
Width 1,799 mm (70.8 in)

Nissan X-trail 1st gen:

Length 4,455 mm (175.4 in
Width 1,758 mm (69.2 in)

There's really not much in it

I'd have the Panda out of those too. The Jimny is a great little 4x4, but its pretty cramped inside.

+1, we had one of these as well as a RR, and I never got it stuck it always managed to keep going.

Honda CRV, petrol is nippy as anything, loads of space for kids, biggish boot, part time 4wd
Typical jap reliability, can't go wrong.

On balance I'd go CRV if you don't need proper 4wd, and a rav 4 if you need the ability to diff lock etc

I don't think the Rav4 has a diff lock.
