Why the need to be so rude? It devalues the point you go on to make.Bill said:

I agree but OTOH it was such a heap of misinformed drivel it didn't warrant a sensible reply. And the poster has such entrenched views they'll never change.FatSumo said:
To be fair, I feel the same every time I read a post describing the rx8 as only managing 3mpg and doing 5mpg on oil
Indeed. I'm slowly winding myself up to replace me old Golf Gti for RX8. It can be difficult to see past the negative comments. Not over concerned about mpg. The £500 VED tax for the newer models is a downer however. That's a lot for me to justify for a 'second/fun' car. So I'll probably be looking for a pre 2006.Apologies to the OP for going OT. I'd consider a Subaru Forester as an ideal vehicle for the job.
Get an XT for added fun.

Defiantly steer clear of Land rovers unless you like tinkering and its a hobby vehicle, remember they are basically a poor copy of a jeep with British Leyland build quality ,
..
What total bks. Been driving Range Rover classics and now Disco 2 for over 20 years. Always as my everyday car and for weekend greenlaing trips. Never had huge reliability problems. ..
My current D2 have owned for 6 years and after changing from air bags to springs no issues worth talking about.
As much as it pains me to say it... avoid land rover like the plague unless you are a genuine enthusiast and don't mind getting your hands dirty.
For trouble free motoring stick with the Japanese brands.
If you only want decent ground clearance, than a RAV 4 will suit the bill.
For proper off-roading, look at the Land cruiser or Nissan patrol

I would recommend a Freelander 2
Go for the HSE edition if you can get one
Its a brillaint family car
Not expensive to maintain
good MPG
decent drive
Safe 5 star NCAP rating
I think he'll struggle for £4-£5K most on AT seem to have moon & back miles. Go for the HSE edition if you can get one

A Jeep would be my choice but then I have a Grand anyway!
